Winery notes (2025 Vintage)
"Felton Road farms four properties totalling 34 ha in the Bannockburn subregion of Central Otago. Calvert Vineyard is located on Felton Road and is just 1km east of The Elms Vineyard and the winery. The soils at Calvert are deep heavy silts with a thin layer of loess topsoil.

The unique gravity flow winery enabled the grapes to be gently destemmed directly into open-top fermenters without harsh pumping with approximately 25% retained as whole clusters. Long pre-fermentation soaks of 9 days prior to fermentation with indigenous yeasts and punched down by hand up to two times per day, with a total time on skins of 22-25 days. Pressed off and barrels filled immediately by gravity to the underground barrel cellars. The wine spent 17 months in barrel (20% new French) with two rackings and no fining or filtration, before bottling in late-August 2026.

Deep, serious, complex – a reflection of the vines’ travails following the frost of 3 November? Perhaps; but these are descriptors which attach themselves to Calvert with regularity – much as ‘violets’, ‘pomegranate’, and ‘amaro’ do – all apt in this wine. Characteristic clay-derived tannins deftly hold the palate, relaxing into a silky finish. In 2025, frost robbed Calvert of some of its yield but none of its character. "

97/100 James Suckling (2024 Vintage)
"The purity and integrity of the fruit on the nose is impressive, with ripe strawberries, orange peel and hints of white pepper and dried herbs. It’s medium-bodied with crunchy fruit, lovely fruit tannins and a vivid finish. A mix of Dijon clones. From biodynamically grown grapes."

Rated Outstanding & 96/100 Cameron Douglas MS, December 2025 (2024 Vintage)
"Fantastic bouquet with scents and flavours of sand and clay, spice and dark berry fruits. Dried raspberry and boysenberry, layers with smoky wood and clove, plum and violets. There’s a wild dried herb quality and as the wine opens out the intensity and complexity of each flavours grows. A dry wine with firm tannins, lots of polish and energy, acidity carries all the flavours keep the palate engaged throughout. Lengthy and complex a wine to savour when young and older. Best drinking from as early as today through 2038+."

Felton Road Wines epitomises the harmony of organic and biodynamic viticulture with a commitment to quality and sustainability. The Felton Road Pinot Noir Bannockburn showcases their dedication to crafting exceptional wines. This vintage reveals a nose of dark roses and violets, offering a transparent and ethereal character. On the palate, it presents savoury notes with lovely fruits and no hint of New World sweetness. The tannins are firm but not harsh, complemented by subtle herbal tones that add freshness and intrigue. It’s a classic expression from their four Bannockburn vineyards.

Similarly, Felton Road's Chardonnay Bannockburn stands out with its pure grapefruit zest, citrus, and stonefruit kernel. The palate balances acid effortlessly, with a clean profile and a pleasing absence of oak, making it a benchmark Chardonnay.

Felton Road's Riesling Bannockburn impresses with brooding aromas of wet stones and stonefruits. It opens with a burst of sweetness tempered by intense stonefruit flavours and crisp acidity, reflecting the uniqueness of their Bannockburn terroir.

Felton Road’s meticulous approach begins with site selection and organic practices. Their four vineyards in Bannockburn, managed with precision and hand care, contribute to wines that express their terroir authentically. The gravity-flow winery and non-interventionalist winemaking methods preserve the true character of each varietal, making their wines both approachable and age-worthy.
