Winery notes (2023 Vintage)
"From one of our most challenging, but also most rewarding vintages to date. It was a cool, wet season that thankfully broke in late Feb allowing us to harvest high quality fruit, particularly from the later ripening sites of Te Muna Rd. The Escarpment Martinborough Pinot Noir is an assemblage of our top Pinot Noir vineyards from across the district, with the 2023 blend almost exclusively from the Te Muna Road sub region. Grapes were harvested and crushed to open top fermenters with minimal intervention until the wine was pressed. Each parcel was plunged once daily for gentle extraction and macerated on skins for about 25 days. They were then aged in French oak barriques (29% new) for 11 months followed by a further nine months in stainless steel tanks. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration.
A lovely perfume springs out of the glass, with wild berries, thyme, forest floor and Chinese 5 spice. It is a complex wine with savory nuances and further notes of charcuterie, orange skin and dark chocolate. The palate is taught and focused with herbs, spice and dried fruit. The tannins are ripe and true to the region, giving the wine shape and identity. The wine showcases the purity of the 2023 vintage. Wines that are elegant but still with depth, concentration and structure. It is medium bodied and a distinct expression of Martinborough Pinot Noir and the vintage."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, February 2026 (2023 Vintage)
"This is immediately appealing on the nose, showing sweet cherry, olive, clove, and toasted nut aromas. The palate is equally attractive, with succulent fruit flavours, a silky texture, and fine tannins, making it well-balanced and structured, with a lingering, soothing finish. At its best: now to 2033."
Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, February 2026 (2023 Vintage)
"I am immediately seduced by the natural scents of this wine with a core of site with a clay stone-like suggestion, wild red strawberry and flowers, cherry and barrel spice and gentle wood smoke. A dry wine led by textures from fine tannins and decent acid line, there’s length and mouthfeel throughout the palate then core flavours of light red berry fruits and spice. A fine savoury seam lingers adding length and style. Well made and ready to drink from day f purchase through 2030+."
5 Stars & 93/100 Candice Chow, CandiceWineChat.com (2023 Vintage)
"For this vintage, the majority of the fruit came from Te Muna Road, penetrating lifted nuances of red fruit and haunting floral notes, alongside broody herbs and silky tannins, elegantly framing the season."
92/100 Erin Larkin, RobertParker.com, Wine Advocate, September 2025 (2023 Vintage)
"The wine is silky and fine, and while the season may have provided challenges in the vineyard, this is not evident tin the glass. There are notes of cherry seed, almond, redcurrant and pomegranate pearls, with paprika dolce and cracked fennel seeds as well. This wine is really smart. It matured for 11 months in French oak barrique, 29% new."
