Winery notes (2024 Vintage)
"The Home Block is where it all began back in 1980, and our quest to perfect Martinborough’s venerable style continues here today with some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines in New Zealand. Winemaker Tom Turner’s pursuit of perfection starts in the vineyard and can be found in every structured, balanced, nuanced glass of Martinborough Vineyard.
Complex, brooding, and pure, with dark cherry and ripe plum layered over savoury, earthy spice. Powerful yet elegant, with impressive length, depth, and restrained structure—showing excellent aging potential. Ideal with grilled or roasted red meats with herbs, earthy vegetables or mushrooms, and even dark chocolate desserts.
Fruit was hand-picked and meticulously hand sorted before being destemmed and fermented with natural yeast. A portion of the clusters are kept whole and put directly into the fermenter. During this time the ferments are hand plunged and the must is moved around to gently extract tannin from the berries and build structure. Post fermentation the wine is put into French oak barrels where natural malolactic conversion occurs and the wine is aged for a period of eleven months before being blended and bottled the following winter."
5 Stars & Top 10 Cuisine Pinot Noir Tasting, April 2026 (2024 Vintage)
"Red plum, black cherries and tomato stalk herbals come through alongside strawberry jam, violets and lavender on this quite complex, floral nose. The palate is busy, but not cluttered with nicely concentrated and juicy fruit flavours that are very ripe, yet the freshness is unimpacted. Well constructed."
Rated Outstanding & 95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, August 2026 (2024 Vintage)
"A fantastic expression with a bouquet of fresh and dried roses, black cherry and Doris plums then layers of earth and wood-smoke from red clay and stones to baking spices of nutmeg and clove. Intriguing yet familiar, youthful yet showcasing older vines perfumes and concentration. Dry, still taut and with lots of poise to reflect on the textures from finely polished tannins to a pert acid line. Core fruit flavours mirror the bouquet with a complexity and charm that is both the Martinborough vineyard style as much as it is a reflection of site and vintage. Lengthy and delicious with best drinking from 2030 through 2040"
