Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"At the summit of “The Terraces” vineyard lies a limestone plateau, subdivided into four small plots of Syrah, totalling 1.1 hectares. Gently sloping to the north this is a warm site, but moderated by the sea breeze from the Pacific Ocean which lies 1 kilometre to the east. Once the home of Heipipi Pa, this vineyard offers incredible views of northern Hawkes Bay and with its limestone and shell base produces a unique wine. Planted in 2007, with the Limmer Clone, the dry farmed vines are cane pruned and intensively managed to produce wine of exceptional quality.

The fruit was hand-picked on April 1st and fermented as a mix of whole cluster bunches and de-stemmed fruit in a single concrete fermenter. Indigenous yeasts were utilised for fermentation and after a period of post ferment maceration the wine was pressed to large format oak barrels for maturation. After 20 months maturation a blend was made from selected barrels and the wine bottled unfined and unfiltered in March 2023.

This is a complex and intriguing wine showcasing its limestone soils. Aromas of rose petal and red berries are compelling. The wine is elegant with a brambly red fruited profile, but a firm tannic backbone provides complexity and length. Raised in large format barrels the wine has little oak flavour, instead showcasing the beauty of its unique site."

5 Stars & 97/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, April2 203 (2021 Vintage)
"This is immensely seductive on the nose with blackberry, sweet plum, rich floral, game and cedary oak characters, leading to a concentrated palate offering power as well as elegance. Sophisticated and seamlessly expressed with a sustained structured finish. At its best: 2025 to 2039."

5 Stars & 96/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, May 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"Intense, dense and silken-textured red with blackcurrant, cassis, cacao powder and a hint of oyster shell. Delicious wine that overwhelms the senses, particularly if it is aerated. A great candidate for the cellar."

Rated Outstanding & 95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, May 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"Plush, ripe red fruited bouquet with concentration, freshness and power. The variety speaks loud in the bouquet with scents of fresh raspberry flesh black currant and red peppercorn. The sense of place is strong with aromas of clay, dry stones and gravels. Firm, taut, ripe, varietal and dry on the palate. Dusty-edged tannin and back bone acid lines set a strong foundation, the fruit and wood flavours sit nicely alongside and are just beginning to start the integration process. Complex and lengthy, a wine worthy of your attention. Well made, youthful and needing time in cellar. Best drinking from 2025 through 2035+."

Esk Valley thrived under Sir George Fistonich's ownership of Glenvale Winery since 1986. It evolved from a port and sherry market to a producer of innovative, high-quality wines. Winemaker Gordon Russell pushed boundaries, introducing new grape varieties and styles in Hawkes Bay.

From historic cellars in northern Hawkes Bay to the new winery in Gimblett Gravels, Esk Valley creates top-notch wines. Using traditional methods like concrete fermenters for red grapes, they continue to build their reputation.

Gordon Russell, born in New Plymouth, developed a passion for fine wine during his travels in Europe. Returning to New Zealand in 1986, he became Esk Valley's winemaker in 1993 after working for Villa Maria and Esk Valley as an assistant winemaker.

Gordon aims to craft wines that express their vineyard origins. By focusing on vineyard care, he simplifies the winemaking process. Esk Valley strives for a natural style, utilising wild yeast and extended lees ageing.

Esk Valley sources grapes from Hawkes Bay and Marlborough. Hawkes Bay's warm climate and gravel soils are ideal for reds and fuller whites. Marlborough, known for its unique Sauvignon Blanc, produces vibrant wines. Esk Valley offers a range including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Syrah, Chardonnay, Verdelho, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Noir.
