Black Cottage is the value offering from Two Rivers winemaker, Dave Clouston. The idea of this range is to provide wines that are accessible to all people, charismatic, high energy, approachable and delicious, or as Dave likes to phrase it, "wines with gusto". Not constrained by site, Dave sources parcels of wine from across the country that he knows will nail his brief.
Offering fantastic value, this syrah shows all the hallmarks of quality Hawkes Bay examples at a fraction of the price of its peers. Plush dark fruits are supported by subtle spice and fine, juicy tannins, creating a smooth and satisfying finish.
Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"With bright crimson hues, this delicious syrah is bursting with blue fruits, plum, violets, and spice. There’s a lovely earthiness on the palate with notes of raspberry, florals and just a touch of black pepper coming through. Plush tannins and a robust mouthfeel round off the finish.
Sourced from New Zealand's premium red wine region, the grapes for this Syrah were harvested predominantly from the Gimblett Gravels sub-region of Hawke’s Bay. The wine was matured with French oak for 10 months."
5 Stars & 93/100, Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, June 2024 (2021 Vintage)
"It's splendidly fruited and enticing on the nose with Black Doris plum, blueberry, rich floral and warm spice aromas, followed by a succulent palate that's plump and flavoursome. Beautifully framed by finely infused tannins, finishing long and delectable. At its best: now to 2029."
92+/100 Cameron Douglas MS, June 2024 (2021 Vintage)
"Great colour and bouquet with dark ruby and purples, black currant and soft licorice spice, baked plum and a fine layer of pepper dust. Dry with medium weight and intensity, flavours of dark berries and spice, a light smoky wood quality and textures from firm-ish tannins and acid line. Developing nicely with best drinking from 2025 through 2030+."
