Selected for the Annual Vintage Selection, the 12 best wines produced from the Gimblett Gravels region from 2021.

Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"Deep purple and violet in glass, the nose presents well with darker florals, a touch of cassis, pepper spice and with a lovely dark spiced plum floating in the background. To taste the palate is supple and elegantly managed with fine gentle tannin and a long savoury spice finish. This dark-fruited, spice-laced wine is a perfect partner for grilled lamb, slow cooked beef, or venison. It's supple palate and savory finish also pair beautifully with roasted vegetables, hard cheese and charcuterie.

Fruit was selected and hand harvested from the Watercourse block from the heart of our Gimblett Gravels in Mid March. Gently handled throughout it's winemaking, this wine is a fine example of a Gimblett Gravels Syrah. Fermented in closed stainless-steel fermenters with gentle remontage for colour, flavour and tannin extraction. The young wine was transferred to predominantly new French Oak barrels and matured for 13 months, with regular racking for clarification and freshness.

96/100 Andrew Caillard MW, Gimblett Gravels AVS (2021 Vintage)
"Medium-deep crimson. Beautiful raspberry, black pepper aromas with underlying roasted chestnut notes. Supple and expressive with plentiful pure raspberry, strawberry fruits fine slinky textures, lovely mid palate viscosity and well-integrated roasted chestnut notes. Finishes chalky, juicy and minerally with a fine tannin plume. Elegantly styled but superbly balanced wine."

Rated Outstanding & 95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, May 2024 (2021 Vintage)
"A powerful bouquet with a core of dark red berries, peppery spices, clove and wood smoke, iron mineral and dry-stones. Blackcurrant and baked raspberries, blue fruits and violets all rush through the scent senses. Firm, dry, concentrated and delicious, a complete wine with firm tannins and big backbone of acidity, there’s a delicious natural sweetness from the fruit and oak, a wine that will develop and deliver if stored well. Best enjoyed with earthy winter fare and cheese. Best drinking from day of purchase through 2033."

Pask holds a special place in the story of Hawke’s Bay wine. It began in 1981, when founder Chris Pask spotted the potential of the ancient Ngaruroro riverbed while flying overhead in his topdressing plane.

Recognising the promise of its warm, stony soils, he planted the first vines in what would become the renowned Gimblett Gravels winegrowing district. Pask’s maiden 1985 Cabernet Sauvignon marked the beginning of a winemaking legacy that now spans more than four decades.

Today, under the care of the Benton family, Pask farms 60 hectares of vineyards. The warm microclimate and free-draining gravel soils are particularly well suited to Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, producing wines with depth, character and a clear sense of place. Sustainability has long been central to the winery’s approach, with Pask becoming one of New Zealand’s first wineries to achieve ISO 14001 environmental accreditation in 1998. From vineyard to bottle, its small team continues to create authentic Hawke’s Bay wines with care and purpose.
