Winery notes (2024 Vintage)
“Kahu, Māori for our native harrier hawk, is the inspiration for the name of the Hensley family’s vineyard, one of our longstanding sites. This is the first vintage we have made a dry Riesling from this vineyard. The late Gerald Hensley’s passion lay with dry wines, so it is only fitting to honour his memory with a dry style rather than the luscious dessert wine normally produced from this vineyard. 2024 was a magnificent vintage, the best we have seen in the last 30 years, a long dry autumn with cool nights gave us clean pristine fruit, with purity of aroma and wonderful acidity. A wonderful, joyful, aromatic nose of orange blossom, daphne, nougat, and ripe fig sap. Flavours of cut apple and talcum powder roll through the palate. With a wonderful balance of weight and acidity, this dry Riesling carries itself with poise and precision.”

“Floral, delicate bouquet with scents of blossoms and minerality of pebbles and stones then aromas of lime and lemon, a mix of apple and mandarin. On the palate very crisp and new, a wine that will easily benefit from cellar time. Flavours of mandarin and citrus, minerality and some saline qualities grown stronger as the wine opens out in glass and becomes more ambient. Delicious – a wine that will reward if given time. Best from 2029 through 2040. After 5 days open [in bottle] the wine still holds onto its core flavours and textures, just better.”

“Pristine and finely scented, the bouquet presents notes of crunchy apple, lemongrass, lime peel, and green tea. The palate displays excellent focus and drive, wonderfully supported by saline texture and racy acidity, finishing impressively long and structured. At its best: 2026 to 2036.”

“This vivacious, dry riesling come from a long-standing grower vineyard, the Hensley Family Vineyard (Kahu is the Te Reo Māori name of the native harrier hawk) which has previously only been bottled as Ata Rangi’s sought-after sweet Kahu Riesling. This vintage of dry riesling was made to honour the memory of Gerald Hensley who (ironically) loved dry wines!
Billowing aromas of tangelo and lemonade apples carry a whiff of ground spice and cookie dough on this expressive, ripe riesling. The palate bursts with mouth-watering acidity and orange flavours, brought to the fore by pithy phenolics and sherbet-like zing. Plenty of length, but curiously sitting front and centre on the palate rather than in the back. Though it is dry, the palate is juicy and inviting, giving it a broad drinking window.
