Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2025

Under the ownership of the Foley group (Martinborough Vineyards, Vavasour, Mt Difficulty) and with winemaker John Kavanagh (ex-Neudorf) onboard, Te Kairanga have really upped their game in recent years. John Martin is Te Kairanga's top Pinot Noir and crafted from their best vineyard parcels.

Winery notes (2024 Vintage)
"Te Kairanga John Martin Pinot Noir 2024 is named after the founding father of Martinborough, John Martin and is crafted from the best vineyard parcels from his original landholdings and some of the oldest vines in the region.

A cherry red Pinot Noir bursting with a deep complex nose of brambly red fruits, exotic spices, toasted almonds, charcuterie and forest floor aromas.Fine linear tannins lead to a flowing minerality and an enticing deep fruit finish. This wine is best enjoyed alongside slow cooked game-y dishes, like venison or mushrooms."

94/100 Stephen Wong, The Real Review, November 2025 (2024 Vintage)
"A selection of the best parcels from the Todd, McLeod and Home vineyards, 2024 is the result of smaller crop with a bit of January heat followed by a long, dry season thereafter. The clonal mix included Abel this year. Everything is hand-picked, hand-sorted and fully destemmed. The extraction was via hand plunging and fermentation was by native yeasts. The wine aged for 10 months in oak, 21% of which was new.

Lovely violets here alongside purple fruit, boysenberry and raspberry. Vibrant and elegant, very balanced and with sleek submerged tannins. The structure creates excellent flow, allowing the fruit to unfold long and late on the palate. Excellent acidity followed by a gentle grip right on the end, resulting in an elegant mid-weight pinot noir with presence."

93/100 David Walker Bell, WineFolio.co.nz, December 2025 (2024 Vintage)
"A Pinot Noir from Martinborough: named after the founding father of Martinborough, John Martin – winner of a Gold Medal at NZIWS this year. A striking deep burgundy purple colour in the glass. Scented with blackberry, cherry, raspberry, damson and violet florals. Quite tight and youthful, with a structure of grippy but fine tannin, moderate acidity and plenty of spicy, savoury tones – cloves, nori, salami and mushroom – to offset that ripe juice. Medium-bodied but with good concentration and depth, and a long, dry finish."

Te Kairanga sits at the heart of Martinborough’s wine story, its vines rooted in the very land farmed by town founder John Martin in the 1880s. Revitalised in the 1980s by a new generation of pioneers, the estate continues to realise the potential of this special site. Pinot Noir is the beating heart, complemented by small, characterful parcels of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Riesling that showcase the region’s cool-climate abundance. Once a place known for sheep, Martinborough became a magnet for the wine-curious—and Te Kairanga embodies that spirit. Winemaker John Kavanagh moved here specifically for Pinot Noir, guiding wines that are detailed, site-true and unmistakably Martinborough.
