Owner Gavin Yortt along with winemaker Jenny Dobson are producing a seriously good range of wines and this 2023 vintage Chatterer Syrah highlights the quality and value being made at Squawking Magpie. Dark and juicy with a depth of flavour that belies its modest price.

Winery notes (2023 Vintage)
"This barrel aged Syrah, from a great vintage, displays lovely ripe fruit with pepper and liquorice tones. Supple tannins with a firm, smooth and spicy finish delivers a classic Hawke’s Bay Syrah."

Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, June 2025 (2023 Vintage)
"Very bright with a purple ruby core and pink rim. Aromas of raspberry and cherry, plum, peppercorn, earth and smoke and sour cherry compote invade the senses. Youthful and ripe, enticing and fresh with a judicious use of oak. Dry, excellent wight and style on the palate, flavours of plum and blackcurrant, ripe and sour cherry then spices from barrel and variety with a peppercorn note. COmplex, smoky, a core of fruit and spice, sense of place and lotrs of style. Best drinking from 2027 through 2034+."

Gold Medal, 5 Stars & Number 1, Dish Syrah Tasting, July 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"With its intense aromatics, generously juicy mid-palate, savoury tones and supple tannins, this stunning syrah sailed straight into the recalls and roared through the final tasting in rockstar fashion. Bold pepper, cherry, and plummy characters merge with hints of lantana and violets to create an incredibly savoury, stylish and elegantly poised syrah that seriously overdelivers in the drink-for-your-dollar stakes. Gorgeous."

Judges' Comments, New World Wine Awards 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"Hugely respected winemaker, Jenny Dobson (first ever female winemaker in Bordeaux, France, by the way) has fashioned this stunning Syrah with an exquisite touch. Pristine and perfumed with Black Doris plum, sweet cherry, warm spice and hazelnut aromas, it’s mouthfilling with succulent flavours. Go bold when matching with food. Go roast lamb, or duck."

93/100 & Top Value, Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, October 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"Dense, inky Gimblett Gravels syrah with cassis, blackcurrant, black pepper, dark-fleshed plum and mixed spices. Bright, high-energy wine with a backbone of firm, ripe tannins that suggest good ageing potential. Good value at this price."
