Cloudy Bay set the benchmark for New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc over 40 years ago and it is still doing so now. In the world of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc it is too easy to be caught into the flotsam of the sea of mediocrity. This is and always has been immune to the demands of 'cheapest is best'. The focus is on being the best. An excellent release.

Widely regarded as the quintessential expression of the acclaimed Marlborough wine region, Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc is an international benchmark wine noted for its vibrant aromatics, layers of pure fruit flavours and fine structure.

Winery notes (2026 Vintage)
"Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc put New Zealand on the map with its captivating flavour. Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2026, is aromatic and expressive on the nose, with notes of lemon-sherbet, passionfruit, peach and grapefruit skin abound, alongside a hint of makrut lime leaf and something reminiscent of the scent of sun-warmed sand dunes. The palate is vibrant and intense, with those same characteristic notes found on the nose now creating a concentrated core of luscious fruit, which is given balance and freshness by a dart of lively steel-cut-lemon acidity and a fresh saline tang on the finish.

The free-run juice was cold settled before racking and inoculation with selected yeast. Fermentation was carried out primarily in stainless steel tanks, with around 3.7% of the blend fermented at warmer temperatures in large-format oak vats. A portion was also fermented using wild yeast to build texture and complexity. We tasted 92 different portions, of which 83 were selected to create the final blend."

Rated Excellent & 94/100 Cameron Douglas, October 2026 (2026 Vintage)
"Pungent and fruity, varietal and intense, some elegance with plenty of mineral and floral moments. White flowers and tropical fruits, meyer lemon, golden kiwifruit, peaches and fresh sweet herbs. A delicious wine on the palate with a plush mouthfeel and core of ripe citrus and tree fruits, some tropical and mineral qualities. A vibrant acid line and plenty of length. A well made wine with best drinking from day of purchase through 2032."

Cloudy Bay is proudly numbered among Marlborough's trailblazing first five wine makers, who staked their claims at a time when it was virtually impossible to envision how the area would be transformed and thrive as a world-leading wine region. David Hohnen, Cloudy Bay's founder, had faith in the land's latent viticultural potential which gave him a headstart on developing some of its most suitable land.

Cloudy Bay takes its name from an expanse of water named by explorer James Cook. The sea was cloudy at the time, full of sediment from recent flooding run-off. The moniker captures the evocative quality of the transitory nature of New Zealand's land and seascapes - befitting for an accomplished wine producer.

At the heart of Cloudy Bay's wine-making philosophy is the desire to get the absolute best out of their world-class vineyards in Marlborough and Central Otago - carving out an unmistakable style made possible only through a deep understanding of grape and terroir combinations.

Central Otago is the world's most southern wine region and Cloudy Bay works hard to harness the best of its continental terroir, in a location where site selection is critical, to produce distinctively Central Otago notes of dark fruit and wild mountain herbs. Further north in Marlborough, Cloudy Bay sauvignons burst with bright expressive aromatics, with beautiful citrus and stone fruit characters shining forth.
