When you just feel like something a little different, a wee change from the usual sunshine drinking of Rosé, Sauvignon or Gris then take a look at this release from the fine folk at Astrolabe. The 2025 Sec Chenin Blanc is simply great drinking, bright and fresh with a beautiful balance between the lush and the zippy with crisp pip fruits underpinned by a honied richness. Delicious!
Winery notes (2025 Vintage)
"The Astrolabe Wrekin Vineyard Demi-Sec Chenin Blanc is grown on the sunny clay slopes of the Southern Valleys of Marlborough, at the organic Wrekin Vineyard. The chenin block has interrow plantings of flowering buckwheat, which encourages biodiversity, attracting beneficial insects that work to keep the vines free from harmful pests.
I’ve made this wine dry but with a hint of residual sugar to balance the zippiness from the natural acidity of the fruit. I have preserved the charming fruit flavour by fermenting in neutral stainless vessels. The wine has more retained spritziness from the fermentation, which adds to the vivacity in the glass. It is a great drinking style, ready to go for spring and summer!
Aromas of apple, green strawberries, blossom, pineapple, pear and elderflower. The palate is medium-bodied, with good acidity and a light spritziness, giving flavours of red apple, nectarine and honeysuckle."
Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, November 2025 (2025 Vintage)
"Aromas and flavours of fresh apples and green pears, there's a distinctive layer of minerality offering stone. White flowers and some sweet lemon complete the bouquet. High acidity, salivating and fresh with persistent flavours and textures. Well made with best drinking from 2027 through 2033+."
