5 Stars & 18.5+/20 Raymond Chan, October 2016 (2015 Vintage)
"Bright, light straw-yellow colour with slight green hues, pale on the rim. The nose is elegantly concentrated with intense and vibrant aromas of white stonefruits and citrus fruit harmoniously intermixed with layers of flinty and minerally lees to form a tight, softly dense core which unfolds nuances of smoke and spicy oak. Medium-bodied, the palate is fresh and bright with lively fruit flavours of white and yellow stonefruits, citrus fruits and complexing gunflint lees and mineral elements. The mouthfeel is zesty and refreshing with lively acidity, and the wine follows a refined, fine-textured phenolic line. Creamy barrel-ferment textures balance the acidity and the wine carries with lusciousness and energy to a long, crisp finish of citrus fruit, flint and oak. This is a bright and brisk, lively Chardonnay with stonefruit and citrus flavours complexed by flint and mineral notes and spicy oak. Match with seafood, poultry and pork over the next 4-5 years. Hand-picked fruit, clones 95, 15 and 548 from the ‘Tin Shed’ and ‘Winery’ vineyards in the Gimblett Gravels, indigenous yeast fermented in 500 L puncheons to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 11 months in barrel with MLF conversion followed by a further 4 months on lees."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit (2015 Vintage)
"Barrel fermented in 500-litre French oak barrels, this is a terrific chardonnay offering power and grace in one. Elegantly lifted aromas of nectarine, citrus, fig and vanilla with subtle flinty complexity on the nose. The palate is wonderfully weighted and rounded, while remaining elegant and poised. The wine delivers superb fruit concentration, backed by seductive complexity, leading to an extremely long, expansive finish. At its best: now to 2021."
4 1/2 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"The winery's flagship 'black label' Chardonnay from Hawke's Bay is typically intense and finely structured. Grown in the Gimblett Gravels and fermented and matured for 10 months in French oak puncheons, the very youthful 2015 vintage was fermented and matured for a year in French oak puncheons. Light lemon/green, it is mouthfilling, with vibrant, citrusy, peachy flavours, biscuity, mealy and complex, and a dry, very harmonious finish. Best drinking 2018+."
