The Southern Rhone Valley in France is widely regarded as one of, if not the best, wine growing regions in the world. Combine this with a family that has five generations worth of winemaking experience and you have a recipe for excellence. This is Famille Perrin.
Here the family has a number of Estate Vineyards, the most famous of which is the Chateau de Beaucastel, which they bought in 1549. A family business through and through, Famille Perrin is now headed by Jean Pierre and Francois Perrin, who look after the vineyard with a degree of care and attention to detail seldom seen elsewhere.
Having adopted an organic approach to winemaking as early as the 1950s and then biodynamic in 1974, the people of Famille Perrin believe in encouraging and working alongside nature when producing their wines. If they look to plant new vines, a horse and plough is used. This philosophy applies not only to their main Estates, but all the way to their Village Vineyards too. In this way, the family at Chateau de Beaucastel are able to look after and give back to the land that has provided them for so long, and in return are able to create a wine that is unchallenged in its authenticity to the Southern Rhone Valley.
Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"Certified organic by Ecocert, Perrin Nature is not only an organic Côtes-du-Rhône but also a great wine. Using our experience in organic farming at Beaucastel (one of the first big estates to turn to organic farming 40 years ago), this wine is a beautiful expression of fruit with delicate and soft tannins. This wine comes from a vineyard located between Valréas and Vaison-la-Romaine, north of Orange. The vineyard is planted in Grenache and Syrah.
The harvest date is determined by checking the ripeness of the grapes with analysis and tasting the berries. As soon as they arrive at the winery, the grapes are sorted and destemmed. The fermentation takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks between 150hl and 190hl. The extraction is done by pumping over and the frequency is determined by tasting. After racking and malolactic fermentation, the wines are transferred partly to oak barrels and partly to stainless steel vats where they will be aged for a year.
Beautiful clear and shiny ruby-red colour. This wine opens up with a very expressive nose with notes of black fruit and undergrowth highlighted by a beautiful freshness with notes of eucalyptus. Generous and balanced, the palate extends these beautiful aromas supported by an elegant tannic structure, before offering a long finish with delicate notes of aniseed. Pair with roast venison with porcini mushrooms and mocha gravy, dark chocolate mousse and chili."
89/100 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2019 Vintage)
"Hints of crushed stone, dried herbs and black olives join mixed berries on the nose of the 2019 Cotes du Rhone Nature. Medium to full-bodied and loaded with assertive blackberries, blueberries and raspberries, it's a fruit-focused, supple effort, boasting ample generosity and concentration on the palate and finishing with softly dusty tannins. It's the kind of standout entry-level effort that bodes well for the vintage as a whole."
