Winery notes (2013 Vintage)
"A big velvety red with a fresh top note of gentleman's dressing-room about it. A nose tightly bound with aromas of dark red cherry and raspberry fruits hints of vanilla and distant cigar box. Spade Oak Tempranillo is a soft, velvety mouthful, handcrafted to complement rare beef, venison, in fact anything smokey or with a hint of heat about it, this beautiful Spanish red is flourishing on the Poverty Bay flats. Will get even more sensational over the next three to five years.

Dark, even, black-hued ruby-red colour, lively in the glass. Aromas of Spanish cedar, humidor, cigar, elegant savoury notes and vanilla. The palate is soft and tempting, with a touch of supple smoke."
90/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, February 2015 (2013 Vintage)
"It is engaging and immediately appealing on the nose displaying dark plum, game and spice with a hint of dried herb complexity. The palate is fleshy and succulent, and delivers excellent fruit intensity and harmony. The finish is refreshing and attractive with elegant savoury notes. At its best: now to 2018."
4 Stars & 17.5-/20 Raymond Chan, February 2015 (2013 Vintage)
"Fruit from the ‘Spade Oak’ vineyard blended with a small portion of St Laurent, the fruit given a cold soak and wild yeast fermented to 12.8% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 35% new French oak equivalence. Dark, even, black-hued ruby-red colour with light purple hues on the edge. This has an elegant and refined nose, tightly bound with aromas of dark red cherry and raspberry fruits lifted with bright red florals, unveiling nuances of minerals, games and cherry liqueur. Medium-bodied, the palate is tightly concentrated with flavours of dark cherries and raspberry fruits entwined with mineral and leathery nuances, along with a savoury lift. The mouthfeel is fresh with underlying acidity and features powdery tannins that grow in prominence through the mid-palate. The extraction leads to a dry-textured, grainy finish with florals and spicy oak. This is a tightly bound, finely extracted, bright and aromatically fruited Tempranillo. Serve with poultry, pork, veal and Mediterranean fare over the next 5-6+ years."
