95/100 & Gold Medal – Barossa Wine Show 2023

Yalumba are the masters of the full-bodied Shiraz and Cabernet blend, and this modestly priced version shows it shares same gene pool as the more expensive Yalumba reds and is often referred to as a Baby Signature (Yalumba's flagship red.) It is also known as one the great value buys in the world of wine, and we would wholeheartedly agree. Combining the elegance of Cabernet sauvignon and rich, generous flavours of Shiraz, this oozes class. Simply sensational value.

Winery notes (2023 Vintage)
"Established by Samuel Smith in 1849 in the Barossa, Yalumba has flourished under six generations and 175 years of family ownership. The values and traditions of the Hill-Smith family, passed down through generations, have cultivated a sense of unity amidst diversity, inviting wine enthusiasts into a realm of delight and appreciation.

Sourced from Barossa vineyards with vines varying in age from 10 to more than 35 years. The vines are planted in a diverse range of sites with slight variations in micro-climates and soil types, which vary from red brown earths and sandy loams to dark clay soils. These variations contribute to the diversity of flavours in Samuel’s Collection Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

Rich and inviting aromas of black fruit, ripe plum and blackcurrant with notes of liquorice, vanilla and a subtle touch of caramel. A delicate hint of violet lends an elegant, floral lift. The palate is fresh and balanced, with a medley of dark and red fruits supported by fine-grained tannins. Subtle undertones of milk chocolate and warm spice add depth and complexity. The texture is smooth and seamless, carrying through to a long and graceful finish. Matured for 10 months in 12% new French and Hungarian oak hogsheads."

5 Stars & 19.0/20 (95) Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Reviews, November 2025 (2023 Vintage)
"Deep ruby-red with a dark core, lighter on the rim. The nose is full and elegant, with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, cedar, smoke and an amalgam of spice. Full-bodied, aromas of black currant, plum and blackberry, entwined with cedar, black pepper, nutmeg and cardamom. The fruit is poised and succulent, with well-balanced ripeness. Velvety tannins provide structure, unveiling notes of spice and cedar that carry through to a lengthy finish. A balanced and elegant vintage, expressing power with grace. Match with ribeye on the bone and beef & mushroom stew over the next 10 years. 51% Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Barossa Shiraz, fermented to 14% alc, aged for 10 months in 12% new French and Hungarian oak hogsheads."

5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, October 2025 (2023 Vintage)
"Richly fruited with seductive complexity, showing blackcurrant, dark plum, thyme, cedar, and fragrant spice aromas on the nose. It's wonderfully weighted and velvety in the mouth, offering excellent fruit richness with spicy nuances, finishing sturdy and persistent. At its best: now to 2035."

92/100 Cameron Douglas MS, October 2025 (2023 Vintage)
"This wine over delivers on colour, aromatic intensity, flavour and finish. Blackberries and blackcurrant fruits with a fine baking spices and peppery quality. Dry with weight and finely textured mouthfeel framed by a stony dark clay and gentle smoky oak and acid line that carries flavours and freshness. Best drinking from day of purchase through 2029."

92/100 Dave Brookes (2023 Vintage)
"A 51/49% cabernet sauvignon/shiraz blend sourced from vineyards from across the Barossa. Bright magenta/crimson with aromas of blackberry pastille, black cherry and dark plum fruits cut with mixed spice, gentle vanillin oak, fruitcake, citrus blossom, earth and a touch of cola. Plenty of crunchy, pure fruit and abundant energy on the palate, fine, sandy tannin and a medium-length finish. This represents excellent value for money."
