Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"This expression of Pinot Noir is grown on the southern side of the Awatere River in the Seddon Vineyard. It is recognised for producing distinctive red cherry and raspberry flavours with savoury notes of bay leaf. The palate has soft tannins, a juicy linear acidity and culinary herb notes with hints of smooth dark chocolate from the subtle use of French oak.
Fruit set in the cool spring weather was lower than usual, resulting in the development of open bunches with small flavourful berries. From January onwards, Marlborough experienced a summer of the century, with a spell of long hot dry weather with moderately cool nights providing the perfect environment to ensure physiological and flavour ripeness whilst retaining freshness.
The fruit for this single vineyard wine comes from the 98 Terrace subsection within the Seddon Vineyard. This low lying river terrace sitting on the southern bank of the Awatere River was planted in 1998. Whilst in a cool climate, this vineyard is protected from the cooler southern breezes resulting in a warm microclimate."
5 Stars & 96/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, September 2021 (2019 Vintage)
"Stunningly elegant and fine, the wine shows red cherry, raspberry, floral, toasted nut and thyme characters, combined with silky-smooth palate that's seamlessly flowing and lingering. Wonderfully proportioned and harmonious with seductive complexity. At its best: now to 2030."
Rated Excellent & 94/100 Cameron Douglas MS, September 2021 (2019 Vintage)
"Very fragrant and seductive with a core of ripe red currant, cherry and plum, raspberries and sweet roses. Moderate intensity of oak with some barrel spice and toasty qualities. Fresh, fruity, varietal, tense and dry on the palate with flavours of red berries, some dried herb and sweet toasty wood flavours. Coarse silk and velvet textured tannins, plenty of acidity and a lengthy persistent finish. A lovely example, balanced, well made and ready. Best drinking from late 2021 through 2029+."
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2019 Vintage)
"From the south bank of the Awatere River, the very elegant 2019 vintage was hand-picked and matured for over a year in French oak casks. Bright ruby, it is invitingly scented and vibrantly fruity, in a medium to full-bodied style with youthful cherry, plum and spice flavours, savoury notes adding complexity, fresh acidity and ripe, supple tannins. Best drinking 2023+."

"Pale cherry red. The nose is rather subtler than that of the Taylor's Pass. Candied fruit but some delicacy on the palate. This certainly isn't sickly. Fresh and vibrant. A really successful, quite ethereal Pinot Noir. Very pretty indeed."
