Unkel is a small organic vineyard & minimal intervention winery run by husband and wife duo Rob and Kate Burley, located in the picturesque growing region of Nelson/Tasman, New Zealand. Our wines are lovingly handcrafted in order to respect and portray a true sense of time & place.
“Unkel” (variation of the spelling of Uncle), is about working with Mother Nature in the Vineyard to produce the highest quality fruit that we can obtain from her. Once in the winery, rather than being that hands-on, overbearing parent or father figure, you can think of us more like that cruisy, fun, slightly wild Uncle in your life.
Winery notes (2023 Vintage)
"A multi-clonal Pinot Noir composed of clones 777 (39%), 115 (36%), and 10/5 (25%). Atlas, at 83% whole-bunch fermentation over a range of 4-9 days, has a more whole-bunch influence than the Venus Pinot Noir. This was aged in a combination of small and large format old wood for 9 months.
With a slighter deeper fruit spectrum than the Venus and more delicate in weight than 2022, this Pinot Noir has a lovely balance of acid, fruit and tannin. This wine combines raspberry and plum with an attractive herbal lift and slight earthy notes. Fine, savoury tannin with a cleansing acidity leaving your palate fresh and wanting more."
