This is a reserve bottling that The Crater Rim only produce in the very best years. The quality is such that we would quite happily pay many more dollars and still think it's great value. At this price it's borderline ridiculous.

With a few years now in bottle, this really is developing into a special wine showcasing all we love about North Canterbury Pinot Noir; savoury, forest floor and mushroom notes entwined with dark berry fruits and a lovely layer of spicy oak, finishing with perfectly integrated tannins. An absolute treat of a wine, especially at this price point.

Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"The fruit for the Pinot Noir Reserve is a mixture of premium sites across the Waipara Region. The vines are low cropped and sustainably managed to provide fruit of great flavour depth, structure and integrity.

The fruit is fermented in small open top fermenters then gently pressed into new (~30%) and seasoned French oak. The wine is then aged for 15 months. The Waipara Reserve is a selection of the best barrels across our finest vineyards. The wine is bottled without fining of filtration."

5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, July 2025 (2021 Vintage)
"Wonderfully fruited with seductive complexity, the wine shows dark berry, earthy mushroom, game, thyme, and roasted nut characters on the nose. It's concentrated and beautifully flowing in the mouth, offering a richly textured mouthfeel and beautifully melded tannins. Wonderfully harmonious and multi-layered with a sustained, velvety finish. At its best: now to 2033."

The Crater Rim takes its name from the twin craters of the ancient Akaroa and Lyttelton volcanos. Eruptions from these majestic landforms in ages past gifted the surrounding land with an enduring fertility.

The Crater Rim's first yineyard was planted above Akaroa township and the significance of this location in terms of its climatic effect on the whole region of Canterbury meant this brand would extend to include plantings in additional sub-regionsof Waipara, Omihi and Banks Peninsula and Central Otago.

Waipara, in North Canterbury's hills, is now the home base for The Crater Rim where specific sub-regional terriors contribute to the wines produced on their vineyards. Exceptional Pinot Noir is produced at The Crater Rim's winery site, Omihi Rise, also in North Canterbury. The Frahar Vineyard in Waipara also supplies Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

The Crater Rim is a frequent recipient of awards, including multiple medals in the New World Wine Awards and regular reviews by Sam Kim of Wine Orbit.
