Whilst 2020 will always be remembered for Covid Lockdowns, it should also be remembered for its beautiful weather during the first lockdown back in March 2020. What that also meant, was a beautiful harvest for vineyards who got the all clear to operate during the lockdown, albeit within the now infamous 'bubbles'.

The resulting wines from that harvest have been nothing short of spectacular with North Canterbury Pinot Noir being one of the many standouts.

This is a reserve bottling that The Crater Rim only produce in the very best years. The quality is such that we would quite happily pay many more dollars and still think it's great value. At this price it's borderline ridiculous.

With a few years now in bottle, this really is developing into a special wine showcasing all we love about North Canterbury Pinot Noir; savoury, forest floor and mushroom notes entwined with dark berry fruits and a lovely layer of spicy oak, finishing with perfectly integrated tannins. An absolute treat of a wine, especially at this price point.

Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"This Crater Rim 2020 Waipara Valley Reserve Pinot Noir was sourced from our family owned vineyards in the Waipara Valley. The vines were low cropped and sustainably managed to provide fruit of great flavour, depth, structure and integrity. The fruit was fermented in small open vats using natural yeasts followed by 15 months maturation on lees in new and seasoned French oak barriques. After barrel maturation the wine was bottled without fining or filtration.

Aromas of dark cherry, plum and roasted hazelnut followed by sumptuous palate that is concentrated and lavishly textured. A true expression of Waipara Pinot Noir."

5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, June 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"This is magnificently composed and immensely complex, showing dark berry, wild thyme, spicy oak and forest floor characters on the nose. The concentrated palate is both powerful and refined with excellent depth and silky flow. It's richly textured and expansive with an impressively long sophisticated finish. At its best: now to 2032."

The Crater Rim takes its name from the twin craters of the ancient Akaroa and Lyttelton volcanos. Eruptions from these majestic landforms in ages past gifted the surrounding land with an enduring fertility.

The Crater Rim's first yineyard was planted above Akaroa township and the significance of this location in terms of its climatic effect on the whole region of Canterbury meant this brand would extend to include plantings in additional sub-regionsof Waipara, Omihi and Banks Peninsula and Central Otago.

Waipara, in North Canterbury's hills, is now the home base for The Crater Rim where specific sub-regional terriors contribute to the wines produced on their vineyards. Exceptional Pinot Noir is produced at The Crater Rim's winery site, Omihi Rise, also in North Canterbury. The Frahar Vineyard in Waipara also supplies Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

The Crater Rim is a frequent recipient of awards, including multiple medals in the New World Wine Awards and regular reviews by Sam Kim of Wine Orbit.
