It's been a few years since we've had Sacred Hill wines on our shelves, so it's fantastic to welcome back one of Hawke's Bay's most iconic producers. Now under the ownership of the Poulter family, Sacred Hill is enjoying an exciting new chapter, with the exceptionally talented Nick Picone, formerly chief winemaker at Villa Maria and one of New Zealand's most awarded winemakers, leading the winemaking team.
And what a way to make a comeback! From the outstanding 2024 Hawke's Bay vintage, this stunning Gimblett Gravels Syrah is already turning heads, winning the Trophy for Best Syrah at the Hawkes Bay Wine Awards, Double Gold at the 2026 NZ International Wine Show and 95 points from Sam Kim. It was also selected for the prestigious Gimblett Gravels Annual Vintage Selection. We were so impressed that we included it in our recent end-of-year 'Best of the Year' tasting. At just $29.99, this is seriously impressive buying!
Sourced from 22-year-old vines and matured for 18 months in French oak, this is a beautifully expressive, richly flavoured Syrah. Dark plum, blackberry and black cherry aromas mingle with fragrant florals, star anise, cedar and subtle savoury spice. The palate is wonderfully plush and concentrated, with layers of ripe dark fruit, silky tannins and a lovely underlying freshness. There's real depth and structure here, yet it retains that elegance and aromatic lift that makes great Hawke's Bay Syrah so appealing. Delicious drinking now, with plenty of potential to develop further in the cellar.
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, February 2026 (2024 Vintage)
"Wonderfully composed and expressed, the enticing bouquet shows blackberry, dark cherry, game, star anise, and cedar characters. It's wonderfully weighted and plump in the mouth, displaying silky texture and layers of fine tannins, making it superbly structured with a persistent, robust finish. At its best: now to 2034."
93/100 Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, October 2026 (2024 Vintage)
"This spends 18 months in French oak. It kind of shows, peppery spice laced with smoked paprika and a dusting of rasped nutmeg and clove on top. Woody elements lead the wine, dark, inky, supple fruit come in too. Wild forest berries, stewed plums, raspberry liquorice make for a compelling, swishy, soft palate and a lot of sweet, bright fruit coupled to sinewy tannin coming in late to the party. Seductive."
