Winery notes (2023 Vintage)
"This dynamic ‘Hillside’ Syrah is rich and dark with concentrated black berries, dark plums, black pepper, liquorice, dried spice and new French oak. There is a magic element to the Hillside Syrah – so much is happening from multiple layers of flavour. This ‘Hillside’ Syrah is elegantly balanced and seamless – plus will age for many years as have its predecessors.
A hillside site is adjacent the Bridge Pa township, in the heart of Hawke’s Bay. The vines were irrigated during their establishment, but once maturity was reached the irrigation was turned off. The site is sheltered from cool southerly breezes due to its northerly aspect, hence it is very hot during the summer. The vineyard is a mix of Mass Selection (MS) and Clone 470. Both clones ripen at the same time. The 470 clone is renowned for its colour and intensity whereas the Mass Selection has full flavours, so hence it is a heavenly match."

"Wonderfully ripe and fragrant, the bouquet shows Black Doris plum, smoked game, cake spice and cedar characters. The palate is equally satisfying with plump mouthfeel and fleshy texture, splendidly framed by beautifully melded tannins. Harmonious and flavoursome, offering terrific drinking. At its best: now to 2035."
5 Stars & 19/20 (95) Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Reviews, November 2024 (2023 Vintage)
"Deep purple with a ruby hue, lighter on the rim. The nose is elegantly full, with aromas of Damson plum, ripe blackberry, black pepper, violet, cedar and meaty hints. Medium-full bodied, aromas of Damson plum and blackberry have a firm core, unfolding with black pepper, violet, cedar, liquorice and savoury smoke meat. The fruit is succulent with an enticing acid drive, unveiling dark, dusty, smooth tannins, along with savoury spice, lending an elegant, long closing. This seductive Syrah is well-balanced and refined, with integrated opulent fruit and toasty oak details, and a lengthy presence. Match with venison backstrap and lamb roast over the next 10+ years. The fruit was destemmed, crushed and fermented in closed fermentation tanks, after pressing, underwent MLF, then racked to new and seasoned French barriques for 13 months. 14% alc."
