The 2013 Prima Donna will continue the successful lineage of this outstanding Pinot Noir from Pegasus Bay. Sourced from 30+ year old vines. Like the others in the reserve range, this is only made in the top years to produce a wine that they describe as having  'a heavenly voice, a shapely body and a velvety nose'.

Winery notes (2013 Vintage)
"Prima Donna is part of our reserve series which we only make in exceptional years, provided it does not compromise the quality of our estate wines. It is a selection from the best barrels, coming from some of the oldest plantings in the vineyard. As with all our Pinot’s, we use traditional Burgundian winemaking methods.

It has a deep ruby hue. The aromas and flavours evoke impressions of black cherries, purple plums, wild blackberries and mulberries. These are underpinned with a savoury dimension suggestive of roast game, grilled mushrooms and black olive tapenade. There is a layer of velvety tannins that coat and refine its big body and taut muscular structure, helping to draw out its lingering aftertaste of chocolate mocha and spice. While ready to drink on release it can be expected to cellar well and evolve gracefully for many years."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2013 Vintage)
"For its top Waipara red, Pegasus Bay wants 'a heavenly voice, a shapely body and a velvety nose'. Based on the oldest vines, it is matured for 15 to 18 months in French oak barriques (50 per cent new). The 2013 vintage is very refined. Deep and fairly youthful in colour, it is ripely scented, mouthfilling, sweet-fruited and supple, with lovely depth of plummy, spicy flavours, velvety tannins, and notable complexity and harmony. A rich, very graceful wine, it will be long-lived."

5 Stars & 96/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, April 2018 (2013 Vintage)
"A limited edition selection of wine made from grapes grown on the oldest vines in superior vintages. A deeply-scented wine that deserves to be decanted for best results. Intense pinot noir with plum, dark cherry, berry, liquorice, mixed spice and classy oak flavours. Showing some bottle development but capable of much more."

96/100 James Suckling (2013 Vintage)
"The refinement and brilliance of the fruit on offer here really sets this wine apart from the regular Pegasus Bay pinot noir. Deliciously rich dark cherry aromas and flavours are presented amid silky, refined and long-form tannins. A great wine, in every respect."

96/100 Cameron Douglas MS, March 2018 (2013 Vintage)
"Fabulous bouquet with intense Pinosity showing dark cherry and plum fruits laced with fresh new oak and earthy qualities, silty clay soil notes; barrel spice and smoky wood moments. Dry with a dried herb layer, fine to chalky tannins, medium+ (ish) acidity – all resting in a cushion of primary and just emerging secondary fruit flavours. Great length, concentration and finish. What more can I say – it's just lovely!"

92/100 Stephen Tanzer, Vinous (2013 Vintage)
"Bright full red. Pungent, wild aromas of raspberry, herbs, white pepper and game; in a distinctly meaty Burgundian style. Then smooth, savoury and fine-grained in the mouth, with lovely early complexity to the red fruit, smoked meat, rose petal and peppery spice flavours; still some CO2 to be absorbed. Boasts a suave texture for the vintage and conveys an impression of brooding energy. Finishes spicy, subtle and long, with lingering notes of red berries, minerals and earth. A selection of the estate's best barrels, this is routinely one of New Zealand's elite pinot noirs."

5 Stars & 19.5-/20 (97) Raymond Chan, February 2018 (2013 Vintage)
"Very dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the rim, youthful in appearance. The bouquet is full and voluminous with a full array of savoury fruit and floral aromatics, showing ripe, dark-red berry fruit melded with dark and dried herbs, nuances of undergrowth unveiling red floral elements. This is complex, detailed and harmonious in presentation. Medium-bodied, the palate is rich and expansively mouthfilling with an array of savoury red berry fruit along with plum notes, dried herbs, cedar and undergrowth complexities. The lusciously sweet flavours form a deep and rounded heart, showing richness and detail. The fruit is supported by fine-grained tannin structure with balanced acidity. This has drive and linearity, and the wine carries with power to a long, lingering finish. This is a rich and succulently sweet, complex flavoured, mouthfilling Pinot Noir with detail and layers of a fine-structured palate with drive and power. Match with slow-cooked game meat dishes over the next 6-8+ years. A multi-clone blend from vines, many over 30 y.o. and ungrafted, indigenous yeast fermented with 30% whole bunches and many whole berries to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 30% new French oak barrels."

  • NZ Wine Country says "if a wine critic was not passionate about any of Pegasus Bay’s wine they should seriously consider a change in career".
