Gold Medal & 95/100 Decanter World Wines Awards 2024

An incredible MEGA DEAL on this exceptional Chardonnay that is part of Esk Valley's 'Great Dirt Collection'.  These are Esk Valley's top wines that highlight vineyards that are renowned for producing wines of outstanding quality.

One of the last wines made by winemaker extraordinaire, Gordon Russell at Esk Valley who says this about the range…

"All vineyards have a unique fingerprint that you can taste in its wine. While all wines echo the site in which the grapes are grown, only a very small number can create truly fine wine.

The Great Dirt range reflects our finest vineyards and has been carefully crafted to produce our very best wines. With this range we showcase sites with unique dirt that we believe are unquestionably great, whether that be seashell, limestone or gravel."

This is a world class Chardonnay that will provide immense drinking pleasure now, and over the next 5-7 years. Pop some in the cellar and thank yourself later!

Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"This single vineyard wine is sourced from Brian and Leslie Howard’s Bay View vineyard. Situated at the western edge of Bay View Village, the soils here reflect their maritime origin. Prior to the 1931 Napier earthquake this was a tidal estuary where the Esk River met the Ahuriri inner harbour, the land now drained still retains remnants of its past with seashell deposits interspersed throughout the maritime clays. Planted in 1998 the vineyard is dry farmed and intensively managed to produce fruit of the highest quality.

This is a full bodied and creamy textured chardonnay which displays complex flavours of white peach, grilled nuts and grapefruit with a long salty mineral finish. Made with a hands off approach it is a complex and ageworthy wine which showcases the land in which it is grown."

95/100 Judges' Comments, Decanter World Wine Awards (2022 Vintage)
"A delightful bouquet of juicy peach, ripe citrus and crème anglaise shrouded in savoury mineral finesse with a lip-smacking acidity and lush toasty texture. Long and refined."

94/100 Judges' Comments,  International Wine Challenge 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"Tropical mango and red apple. Broad palate layered with beautiful integrated oak. Opulent, extremely long finish."

Esk Valley thrived under Sir George Fistonich's ownership of Glenvale Winery since 1986. It evolved from a port and sherry market to a producer of innovative, high-quality wines. Winemaker Gordon Russell pushed boundaries, introducing new grape varieties and styles in Hawkes Bay.

From historic cellars in northern Hawkes Bay to the new winery in Gimblett Gravels, Esk Valley creates top-notch wines. Using traditional methods like concrete fermenters for red grapes, they continue to build their reputation.

Gordon Russell, born in New Plymouth, developed a passion for fine wine during his travels in Europe. Returning to New Zealand in 1986, he became Esk Valley's winemaker in 1993 after working for Villa Maria and Esk Valley as an assistant winemaker.

Gordon aims to craft wines that express their vineyard origins. By focusing on vineyard care, he simplifies the winemaking process. Esk Valley strives for a natural style, utilising wild yeast and extended lees ageing.

Esk Valley sources grapes from Hawkes Bay and Marlborough. Hawkes Bay's warm climate and gravel soils are ideal for reds and fuller whites. Marlborough, known for its unique Sauvignon Blanc, produces vibrant wines. Esk Valley offers a range including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Syrah, Chardonnay, Verdelho, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Noir.
