This Esk Valley red blend is consistently one of the great value wines coming out of Hawkes Bay. With a long line of accolades that belies its modest price, this is purely and simply a terrific wine to drink now but and also worth putting some in the cellar.
Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"This wine was blended from grapes grown within the renown Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing District. These deep stony soils have excellent drainage and low vigour, ideal for the production of high-quality red wine. Our vineyard sites are close planted and yields per vine are kept low to maximise quality.
This is a smooth and fruit orientated Gimblett Gravels blend. Densely coloured, it has a bouquet of dried herbs, red cherry, blackberry with subtle hints of cedar from a period of barrel maturation. It is soft and generous in nature and can be enjoyed as a youthful wine but possesses sufficient tannin to age gracefully for many years."

Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, May 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"Fabulous bouquet, ripe, fresh and varietal with core fruits of boysenberry and black berries, dark plums layers of wood. The freshness and intensity continues on the palate with flavours of red fruits that mirror the bouquet, wood spices, clove and vanilla, chocolate and sweet wood qualities. Well made, lengthy and delicious. Best drinking from 2024 through 2030+."
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2021 Vintage)
"Offering great value, the 2021 vintage is a blend of Merlot (59 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (23 per cent) and Malbec (18 per cent), grown in the Gimblett Gravels, Hawke's Bay, and matured in oak barrels and tanks. Deeply coloured, it is full-bodied and supple, with good concentration of ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, fresh acidity, and a smooth, finely poised finish. Best drinking 2025+."
Rated Excellent, 5 Stars & 93/100 NZ Wine Rater, March 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"Classic, intense, primary, blackcurrant, cranberries and pencil shavings on the nose with a hint of red capsicum. An elegant, well-made, medium-bodied, supple style with pure fruit and excellent drinkability. However there's a layer of chewy, mouth-filling tannins that will match food and ensure reasonable longevity."
4 Stars & Best Buy Cuisine NZ Bordeaux Tasting, June 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"A youthful and delightfully fragrant nose abundant with aromas of cassis and plum. On the palate these aromas are backed by flavours of bright redcurrants alongside spiced cedar and chewy tannins. A bright, energetic and enjoyable wine.
