"Cloudy Bay Chardonnay 2022 is one for connoisseurs and gastronomic adventurers: refined, poised and balanced. Painstakingly made using traditional techniques, it is a true ‘food wine’. Fruit from vineyards in the stony soils of Wairau Valley and the dense clay of the Southern Valleys work together to create a wine that marries ripe stone fruit and citrusy elegance.

Attractive on the nose, with ripe notes of Meyer lemon and white nectarine. Subtle oak is present, with aromas like the first spoon-crack of the top of a good crème brûlée: vanilla, a hint of darkness and plenty of promise. The palate is taut and vibrant, with mouthwatering citrus framing a core of conference pear and white nectarine. The deft oak complements the fruit concentration, creating structure and ensuring a balanced rather than overtly fruity character. Saline-fresh on the long and beguiling finish."

"A powerful Marlborough wine with impressively concentrated, savoury, lemony, mealy flavours and a proven ability to mature well over the long haul. The grapes are sourced from numerous company-owned and growers' vineyards in the Wairau Valley and Southern Valleys. The vigorous, tightly structured 2022 vintage was fermented in a mix of new oak cuves and French oak barriques (20 per cent new), and barrel-aged for 11 months. Bright, light lemon/green, it is a refined, full-bodied wine, with strong, peachy, citrusy flavours, gentle biscuity notes, fresh acidity, and excellent delicacy, harmony and length. Showing obvious potential, it should be at its best 2026+."

Cloudy Bay is proudly numbered among Marlborough's trailblazing first five wine makers, who staked their claims at a time when it was virtually impossible to envision how the area would be transformed and thrive as a world-leading wine region. David Hohnen, Cloudy Bay's founder, had faith in the land's latent viticultural potential which gave him a headstart on developing some of its most suitable land.

Cloudy Bay takes its name from an expanse of water named by explorer James Cook. The sea was cloudy at the time, full of sediment from recent flooding run-off. The moniker captures the evocative quality of the transitory nature of New Zealand's land and seascapes - befitting for an accomplished wine producer.

At the heart of Cloudy Bay's wine-making philosophy is the desire to get the absolute best out of their world-class vineyards in Marlborough and Central Otago - carving out an unmistakable style made possible only through a deep understanding of grape and terroir combinations.

Central Otago is the world's most southern wine region and Cloudy Bay works hard to harness the best of its continental terroir, in a location where site selection is critical, to produce distinctively Central Otago notes of dark fruit and wild mountain herbs. Further north in Marlborough, Cloudy Bay sauvignons burst with bright expressive aromatics, with beautiful citrus and stone fruit characters shining forth.
