Black Estate have been gaining much attention over the last few years and all of it is well deserved. They are certainly one of the emerging stars in Waipara. The single vineyard wine from the home block at Black Estate displays the hallmark characters of Black Estate Chardonnay – texture, broad suppleness and mineral length.

The Home vineyard is the one in front of the restaurant. All Mendoza clone, planted by Russell Black in 1994. Nicholas makes quite a different style to Russell did, being quite a bit more elegant (no more 15% alc!). Now fully bio-dynamically farmed, a lot of effort has gone into the vineyard to encourage healthy, hardy vines that have roots that penetrate well down into the calcareous vein that runs through the clays soils. 100% naturally fermented in 500l and 600l barrels; 100% malo-lactic and bottled unfined and unfiltered – which means a natural deposit forms and the wine should be gently decanted before serving. This is a rich, concentrated Chardonnay with plenty of palate weight and density.

94/100 Jamie Goode, August 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"13% alcohol. From 5 hectares, established in 1994 and 2011, with some at low (1841 vines/ha) and some at high (6172 vines/ha) density, on sedimentary clay soils. Whole bunch pressed and vineyard-derived yeast. Complex and intense with keen acidity underpinning the bold peach, pear and citrus fruit. Nice weight and structure with really well integrated spicy oak character and some notes of bread and toast, but the lovely pure fruit is the driving force here."

5 Stars & 18.5/20 Raymond Chan, May 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"Bright, full, even light golden-hued yellow colour with some depth. The nose is softly full and well-concentrated with deep aromas of yellow stonefruits along with creamy barrel-ferment elements and nutty oak, unfolding savoury mealy layers with hints of oxidative complexities. This is very well-balanced and presented, and shows plenty of vibrancy. Medium-bodied, the palate has rich, near luscious, mouthfilling and vibrant flavours of yellow stonefruits along with mealy and nutty notes, a little creamy barrel-ferment and subtle complexing oxidative detail. The flavours are rich and mouthfilling with a positive heart, and are enlivened by fresh acidity. The wine carries to an elegant, long finish. This is a rich, mouthfilling Chardonnay with stonefruit and citrus fruit, along with savoury and complex detail, a deep heart and fresh mouthfeel. Match with poultry, pork and veal over the next 4+ years. Fruit from Mendoza clone fruit plated 1994 and vines planted 2011 to clones Mendoza, 95, 548 and 1066, hand-picked with 27% foot-crushed, and all WBP, indigenous yeast fermented tin 500 L casks to 12.5% alc., the wine aged 8 months on lees in 11% new oak with 100% MLF. Certified BioGro organic. 547.58 cases made."

4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"The 2017 vintage is from the Home Vineyard at Omihi, Waipara, where the oldest vines were planted in 1994. Hand-picked and fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels, it was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Light yellow, it is a youthful, tightly structured wine, medium to full-bodied, with excellent intensity of peachy, slightly toasty flavours, a slightly minerally streak, appetising acidity and plenty of personality. Best drinking 2020+. Certified organic."
