Black Estate winemaker Nicholas Brown has been awarded 2022 NZ Winemaker of the Year by Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine

Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"Deep Ruby hue. Complex and alluring aromas of blackcurrant, violets, red cherry, and cinnamon. The supple fruits are followed by mouth filling tannin that bring on earth and autumnal leaves followed by a saline crisp finish. This is an un-fined and unfiltered wine with small amounts of sediment and no added sulphur. Please allow the bottle to stand and settle before pouring. Drink now to 2030.

100% destemmed. 70% whole berry. Fermented in open top fermenters for 28 days using Home vineyard derived yeast. Hand plunged once per day during the peak of ferment. Pressed using a basket press and aged in puncheon (500L French neutral barrels) for 8 months. No SO2 added. Unfined and unfiltered."

Rated Excellent & 94/100 Cameron Douglas MS, June 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"An enticing, savoury and complex bouquet with a core of dried herbs and black olive, dark black berry flesh and cigar smoke all in equal parts as the scents invade the senses. Dry in a medium-bodied frame with firm tannins and plenty of acidity. Flavours of dark berries and savoury dried herb and cigar qualities return with some added power of youth and taut appeal. As the wine opens out in glass the textures and fruit all settle into a rhythm, yet all showing a lot more time in cellar is needed to realise the absolute harmony ahead. Complexity is easy to find. Best drinking from 2028 through 2038."

5 Stars & 18.5+/20 (94) Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Reviews, April 2021 (2020 Vintage)
"Dark, deep inky purple, youthful, even colour throughout. The nose is vibrant and full, with succulent aromas of blackberries, cassis and black plums intermix sweet florals, spices and a touch of minty herbs. Full-bodied, blackberries and cassis nuances have a bright and sweet core, the fragrance of violet floral, minty herbs and warming nutmeg and clove linger to a dry, earthy finish. Ample natural fine tannin extraction contributes to a chewy grip; the fruit is ripe with excellent depth of flavour supported by acid tension. This is a bright and young Cabernet Franc with lush fruit, herb, spice and a solid structure. Match with herb-crusted lamb rack and Cocoa-rubbed baby back ribs over the next 5 years. Fruit sourced from Home Vineyard, handpicked, 100% destemmed, fermented with vineyard derived yeast to 13.5% alc, 28 days on skins, aged in neutral barrels. Unfined and unfiltered, no added sulphur. BioGro organic certified., vegan friendly."
