Black Estate winemaker Nicholas Brown was awarded 2022 NZ Winemaker of the Year by Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine
The Damsteep Vineyard is located in the north east of Waipara Valley at the foot of the Omihi Saddle in North Canterbury. The combination of sandstone/limestone soils with some clay has given the wine its bright fragrant, floral/violet flavours and a silken texture. There is palate filling succulence balanced with minerality. A very attractive Pinot Noir.
Winery notes (2024 Vintage)
"Pinot Noir growing at the top two blocks of our Damsteep vineyard during a wonderful vintage. The fruit was hand-picked from 25-year-old vines at home in 2 ha of clay overlying fractured limestone and sandstone soils.
Silken and bright raspberries, wild forest fruits and graphite. Supple and elastic mid-pallet tannins that are contained with bright and pure minerality – energy and invigorating tension!
Un-fined and unfiltered wine. Decanting will allow maximum expression of aroma and purity of fruit. Drink now to 2038. Certified organic and biodynamic."
5 Stars & 96/100 Stephen Wong MW, The Real Review, February 2026 (2024 Vintage)
"A spectacular rendition of Damsteep, which comes from the two uppermost blocks of the vineyard where the 25 year-old vines grow on a thin layer of clay over the crumbly limestone and sandstone soils. Certified both organic and biodynamic, this site is on another level in 2024 but it will need a bit of time to show its true qualities.
Exotic spice bazaar and herbal medicine with nutmeg, dried dates and jungle fruits. Closed and deep-pitched, the reticent palate is firmly structured but also intensely concentrated with caressing flavours of blackberry, olive and licorice. Very long with well submerged chocolaty tannins and resonant acidity. Violet tones emerge mid-palate, lingering into the finish of grapeseed and spice. An utterly captivating expression and presently unevolved, this will unfurl with bewildering complexity in the years to come."
Rated Excellent & 95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, October 2025 (2024 Vintage)
"A delicious wine, youthful and very new still, the concentration, ripeness and power are classic for the Black Estate style, layers of dried herbs frame a core of dark berry fruit flavours beginning with black raspberry and boysenberry then cherry flesh and a mix of fruit and wood spices. There’s also a definitive seam of mineral with a saline quality. A lengthy finish with best drinking from 2028 through 2036+."
95/100 Emma Jenkins MW, Decanter UK, October 2025 (2024 Vintage)
"The nose is fairly shy, with subtle black plum, wild raspberry, pomegranate, allspice, juniper and a touch of blue florals. Very good flow and consistency across the palate with fine, powdery tannins and mineral tension. Super-long. Very youthful and taut, the structure and fruit concentration suggesting good things to come."
