Winery notes (2025 Vintage)
"A perfume of lavender, violets, freshly cracked white peppercorns and pomegranate. Flavours of tapenade, liquorice and bright blueberries intertwine with graphite like tannins and a lengthy vibrant finish. Spicy, floral and wild-yet-refined. This wine is a chameleon that is approachable in its youth yet has the structure to age gracefully.
The wine is from ‘El Grouso’ vineyard which is a tiny certified organic 1-acre block of close planted Syrah located on the edge of Rapaura and Foxes Island subregions of Marlborough. The vines grow in gravelly alluvial soils over stony riverbeds from the past which are perfectly suited to Syrah and is less than 1km south of the Wairau River. The vineyard is owned by Annie and Al and tended to by themselves and Jordan throughout the season. Large pepper trees dot the property which has a lovely symmetry to the spiciness and pepper character in the wines from this beautiful vineyard.
Handpicked by friends and family on the 13th of April. The grape clusters were placed into a small fermenter and taken to ferment under the plum tree close to the winery. A gentle foot stomp on the bottom layer of fruit to release some juice and a pied de cuve starter was added. Fermentation was influenced by the ambient temperatures, environment and season.
After 14 days in the vineyard the wine was moved a few hundred metres to the winery to be gently drained and pressed. It was aged in old barriques for 12 months, before being racked with a small 40ppm addition of sulphur dioxide. Bottled unfined and unfiltered in April 2026. Over time a small amount of naturally occurring sediment is expected."
