Winery notes (2012 Vintage)
"Christmas Day aromas from the Northern Hemisphere – wood smoke, chocolate, crushed berries and spice. This rather romantic tasting note seems to bring together the complexity and pleasure of the wine. It signals celebration and familiarity. Structurally the wine has serious “torque” and belongs firmly in the Moutere stable. A wine with current appeal and the promise of a secured future. Great Pinot is about flow – the wine moves across the palate with ease and leaves a final flourish which lingers. This enticing palate is framed by subtly integrated tannins which provide a structure to contain the exuberant fruit notes. All very seductive."
5 Stars & 96/100 Bob Campbell MW (2012 Vintage)
“Rich and concentrated wine with layers of flavours including dark cherry, berry, anise and oak. An impressive wine with depth and complexity that needs a few years to reveal it’s full potential. It has quite firm tannins at this stage.
5 Stars & 18.5+/20 Raymond Chan, October 2016 (2012 Vintage)
"Winemaker Todd Stevens has had Mike Saunders as the Neudorf viticulturist for a year now, Mike previously with Esk Valley. However, neither had a hand in this wine, being which was made by John Kavanagh. The 2012 was held back for release, the 2013 following the 2011, as it was deemed to need time to come together. Old clone fruit, fermented without whole clusters, the wine spending 11 month in 30% new oak. Deepish ruby-red colour, now with a little garnet. This has a deep and concentrated nose, solid in presentation, but beginning to round out, showing harmoniously integrated savoury secondary note and layers of complexing interest. Rich-fruited, this is still tightly held, the fruit underlined by lively acidity and fine-grained tannins. Though savoury, this has a purity of line with excellent drive."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2012 Vintage)
"Typically a very classy Nelson red. It is hand-picked at Upper Moutere, in the Neudorf Home Vineyard, and the tiny Pomona Vineyard, where the AM 10/5 vines are over 20 years old. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts, matured for 10 to 12 months in French oak barriques (29 per cent new in 2012), and is usually bottled without fining or filtering. The 2012 is deep and youthful in colour, mouthfilling and very savoury, with dense, ripe plum and spice flavours, hints of herbs, olives and nuts, excellent complexity, and the structure to age; open 2015+."
4 1/2 Stars Cameron Douglas MS, July 2014 (2012 Vintage)
"A gentle bouquet at first then its tendrils begin to unfold and reveal a wine of depth and complexity: ripe, fresh, perfumed and charming. It is also a bouquet that shows the youthful side of this example with a nervousness that needs time in glass/decanter but most likely a cellar. On the palate - dry and flavorful; varietal and poised. This is a wine that has the potential to age gracefully and for a long time - the light red fruits core are contrasted by youthful tannins which have a nervous grip; medium+ acidity and medium+ oak suggestions."
