Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"This is the eleventh release from The Escarpment Vineyard’s close planted vineyard on Te Muna Road, Martinborough. The vines which have grown this wine have been our pride and joy since being planted in 1999. The spacing of 1.5m * 1m (6,600 vines/ha) is approaching the planting densities used in Burgundy from where the inspiration for this wine comes. The season was warm and drier than average for this block. It has created fruit harvested in brilliant condition giving ripe flavours and soft tannins. The summer was as good as the inspirational 2013 vintage.

Fermented in wooden French cuvees, hand plunged and aged in 50% new French oak barriques for 18 months. It was bottled without fining or filtration, promoting soft mouth feel and balance. The wine was given every priority during its elevation and now shows all the hallmarks of a grand young wine on release in 2017. It is at the vanguard of Pinot noir style in the New World and should age gracefully for up to 10 years. The wine is a true re ection of both Martinborough’s unique terroir and the skills and experience of winemakers Larry McKenna and Huw Kinch."
95+/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, May 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Kupe comes from Escarpments home turf over on Te Muna Road. Close planted in 1999. 50% new oak. 70% whole bunch. Dark cherry, aniseed, earth, spicy cinnamon oak on show, plenty of spice. Medium bodied, but firmly tannic, with a black tea character, ‘minerality’ aplenty, ginger biscuit, intense and driving, with serious length leaving a fan of tannin in its wake. Needs at least three years in bottle. Serious stuff."
5 Stars & 19.5/20 Raymond Chan, April 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Full, even, dark, black-red colour, a little lighter on the edge. This has a full, rich nose of ripe black cherry and black-berried fruits with notes of liquorice and lifted spicy oak, entwined with fine black herb and savoury whole bunch stalk perfumes. The nose has real intensity and vitality. Medium-full bodied, the palate is wonderfully rich and succulent with flavours of ripe black cherry and black-berried fruits, along with blackberry compote and a layering of spicy oak, with well-integrated whole bunch stalk elements and dark herb detail. The fruit sweetness and richness is balanced by very fine-grained powdery tannin extraction, and the palate is enlivened by fresh, vibrant acidity lending vitality and energy. The wine carries to a very long, lingering finish of black fruits, liquorice and spices. This is a succulently rich and vibrant, black-fruited Pinot Noir with layers of spice, oak, dark herbs and whole cluster complexities on a very fine-grained, fresh palate. Match with Middle Eastern lamb dishes and most game meats over the next 8-9+ years. The eleventh release of ‘Kupe’. Abel clone fruit from the Escarpment Te Muna Road vineyard, close-planted in 1999, indigenous yeast fermented with 70% whole bunches to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 50% new French oak barriques."
