Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"Le Sol (french: the soil) is born of the renowned Gimblett Gravels viticultural appellation with its gravelly soils attracting the sun in summer and insulating the vines in winter. The vines are planted in the stoniest parts of the vineyard to a heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand in the 1840s.

Deepest red with vibrant purple hue. Brooding aromatics of dried dark rose, violets, blackberry and a lift of sandalwood; characteristic of the red wines from the Gimblett Gravels. Power and elegance jostle across the palate. Classic fine grained tannins vitalize the rich fruit core and carry the wine long for an elegant, dry and sophisticated finish. Quintessential cool-climate Syrah."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"This famous Syrah impresses with its lovely fragrance and finesse. Estate-grown in the Gimblett Gravels of Hawke's Bay, the densely packed 2015 vintage was hand-picked at 23.9 brix and matured for 17 months in French oak barriques (30 per cent new). The colour is deep and purple-flushed; the bouquet floral and peppery. Still very youthful, it is mouthfilling but not heavy, with arrestingly concentrated blackcurrant, plum, spice and black pepper flavours, and a finely textured, lasting finish. Already approachable, it should be at its best 2022+."
98/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, June 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Formidable and luxurious, this dramatic syrah displays blackberry, plum, black olive, violet and toasted almond characters with hints of black pepper and game on the nose. It is superbly concentrated and fleshy on the palate, and delivers loads of delectable flavours and velvety texture, wonderfully supported by supple tannins. It is mouthfilling and gratifying, and finishes impressively long and expansive. 2015 Le Sol is 100% syrah from their Gimblett Gravels vineyard. At its best: 2020 to 2035."
5 Stars & 19.5/20 Raymond Chan, June 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Very dark, saturated black-hued purple-red colour, a little lighter on the rim, and very youthful in appearance. The nose is softly concentrated with densely packed and deep aromas of ripe blackberry fruit and black plums entwined with liquorice and Asian spices, unfolding violet florals and notes of iron-earth minerals, and layers of cedary oak. Medium-full bodied, the palate is rich and lusciously fruited with deeply concentrated flavours of ripe blackberries and dark raspberries, black plums, and subtle notes of liquorice and a fine layer of Asian spices intermingling with violet florals. The oaking is beautifully balanced and integrated, with the palate showing iron-earth and mineral complexities. The fruit is supported by very fine-grained tannin structure providing considerable grip and texture, which carries the rich fruit to a long, dry, fine-textured, exotic-fruited finish of spices, florals and minerals. This is a deeply concentrated, elegantly rich Syrah with considerable fine-grained tannin structure and gip with layers of exotic fruit, spices, florals and oak. Match with roasted and slow-cooked game meat and casseroles over the next 8-10+ years. 100% MS Heritage clone, selected from Blocks 8-14, hand-picked and fully destemmed, and fermented to 13.7% alc., the wine spending 18-28 days on skins and aged 17 months in 30% new French oak barriques."
96/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2015 Vintage)
"Aromas of dark berries, brown and black spices, no mistaking the oak, very fruity and concentrated; a powerful bouquet that envelopes the senses and slowly unfurls in the glass revealing violets and black currant, Kalamata olive and toast. On the palate – as complex as the bouquet suggests with dark spicy black and blue fruit flavours, violet and dark rose, velvet tannins, abundant acidity, concentrated and long. A delicious dry wine. Drink now if you must so long as the wine is decanted first. Best from 2019 through 2029++."
95/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, July 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Contrary, perhaps, to the received wisdom, I think the best red wines from NZ are made from Merlot/Cabernet and blends, or Syrah. Hawke’s Bay is my favourite region in NZ, though it’s neck and neck with Martinborough. In short, I’m a North Island kind of guy. In terms of my reading of Le Sol, it seems a process of continual refinement: oak is pulled back, as is excess ripeness. It’s good to see.

Blueberry and blackcurrant, white (and some all black) pepper, grilled meat, dried flowers, star anise and cinnamon. Medium bodied, fresh and spicy, dusty peppery tannin, vibrant minerally acidity, savoury first, with succulent small berry and dark cherry flavour in tow. Bursts with fresh fruit and white pepper on the long finish. Classic Syrah. All just so."
