Winner & 97/100 – James Halliday Grenache Challenge 2025
Gold Medal & 95/100 – Barossa Wine Show 2025
A new wine for us from the Yalumba portfolio, but one that we are very excited about. As always with Yalumba wines, the quality-to-price ratio here is off the charts. There is a lot of talk in Australia about the rise in popularity of Grenache and with wines like this we can see why!
The fruit comes from old bush vines which were planted in 1929 and 1949 in the Tri-Centenary Vineyard in Vine Vale – That's some vines that are nearly 100 years old! A wickedly good wine, that as you can see by the awards and reviews, has made quite the impression.
Handcrafted from an old vine Grenache block, Vine Vale Grenache is all about the subtlety of whole bunch fermentation. A wine with alluring fragrance, it is complex, savoury and fruit driven. Generous and bright through the palate with a crunch of acidity surrounding the juicy middle palate that Grenache aficionados will love.
Winery notes (2024 Vintage)
"The three blocks were wild fermented together with 30% whole bunch fruit, resulting in this outstanding expression of Vine Vale Grenache. Aromas of fresh strawberry and a delicate hint of rose petal, underpinned by white pepper and subtle flintiness. Layers of crushed Mediterranean herbs mingle with grenadine, ironstone and savoury notes, while a touch of dried juniper berry adds complexity and intrigue. The palate is vibrant and energetic, flavours of redcurrant and cranberry wrapped in fine, talc-like tannins. There’s a distinct mineral edge that carries through to the finish, adding precision and structure to this expressive and layered wine.
This old vine Grenache was crafted from three blocks on our Tri-Centenary Vineyard, planted in 1929, 1949 and 1979, in the tiny Barossa Valley subregion of Vine Vale. The vineyard features deep sandy loam layers underlain with red-brown clay. These soils tend to be deep, holding an abundance of water that is essential for early season growth. With careful management these dry grown vines, in low organic matter soils, can consistently produce outstanding quality fruit."
97/100 Chair of Judges Toby Barlow, James Halliday Grenache Challenge 2025 (2024 Vintage)
"The Yalumba 2024 Vine Vale Grenache won over more of the judges first preferences with its exceptional red fruited freshness, purity, balanced winemaking influence and the persistence of flavour that carried effortlessly across the palate. It’s a very well-crafted and composed wine that speaks to both vineyard and sensitive winemaking. The judges also appreciated and discussed how this modern expression of Grenache would be quite versatile and suited across contemporary cuisines and eating occasions."
95/100 Ray Jordan, WinePilot.com, September 2025 (2024 Vintage)
"Consistently one of my favourite Australian Grenache, and each year I look forward to seeing what it reveals. In this case, the season was very good and it comes from old vines planted in 1929 and 1949. The colour is quite pale crimson, and the body more light than medium. But the aromas are just the start. Strawberry, rose petal, a little spice, raspberry, and a touch of dried herb. The palate is so vibrant and red-fruited, with a crunchy fine acidity sustaining that slightly fleshy, plush, velvety smooth mid-palate. I’m loving it."
94/100 Dave Brookes, James Halliday's Wine Companion, April 2025 (2024 Vintage)
"Yalumba do good things with grenache, that's for sure. This sandy soils of Vine Vale at the base of the Eastern Range are just perfect for the variety, too. They coax the high tones and detail out of the variety that I just love. Supple red cherry, dark plum and raspberry fruits cut with exotic spice, subtle bunchy nuance, cola, gingerbread, citrus blossom and earth. Savoury and great drinking with powdery tannin and tail of raspberry, red cherry and spice."
93/100 Erin Larkin, RobertParker.com, Wine Advocate, September 2025 (2024 Vintage)
"The fruit for this 2024 Vine Vale Grenache is from the same Tri-Centenary vineyard as the Tri-Centenary Grenache, although here the younger vines are utilized. Aromatically, the wine leads with white-top strawberries, sumac notes, paprika dolce, red apple and saline lift. This is nowhere near as complex as the older vines can manage, however the freshness and lift are ultra attractive here. This is a fun wine. The wine represents exceptional value for money."
