Gold Medal – International Wine Challenge 2024
Yalumba are the champions of Viognier and have been continually refining the style they produce. Gone are the rich oily, over-ripe apricot-laden styles of the past. The style now is much finer, yet with the hallmark slightly ginger spice, lemon balm and firmly ripe apricot. Not OTT, there is balance and restraint. Drink this with firm white seafoods such as scallops, prawns and squid.
Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"Yalumba has pioneered the growing and making of Viognier in Australia since our first vineyard plantings high in the Eden Valley in 1980. The grapes are sourced from seven separate blocks across five different vineyards, artfully blended together to create the final wine.
Pure aromas reminiscent of fresh apricots, lifted ginger and fresh white flowers. The palate is long and silky, with stone fruit flavours, a hint of exotic saffron and finishing with an alluring freshness. Fermented and matured for 10 months in older French oak puncheons and barriques."
Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, August 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"Lovely bouquet with striking aromatics of white fleshed stone fruits, sweet citrus and flowers. Classic too on the palate with a silky tock, flavours of white spice and apricot stone, pomaceous fruits and white nectarine. Nicely weight with a satin-cream mouthfeel, medium acidity and lengthy finish. What’s not to like! Best drinking from late 2024 through 2028+."
92/100 Huon Hooke, The Real Review, May 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"Light yellow hue and a spicy varietal nose with aromas of stone-fruits, a hint of honey and traces of malt, nectarine and apricot. It’s rich and full in the mouth with lots of texture and a little alcohol warmth, in balance. Dry and appetising to finish."
91+/100 Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, April 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"It’s spicy, dry and stony. It’s textural too but not in a creamy or indeed oily way; it just has a bit of grip, its dryness exerting an impression. It tastes of stonefruit, gravel, herbs and spices; it tastes sophisticated. Another year or so in bottle won’t do it any harm."
91/100 Dave Brookes, James Halliday's Wine Companion, August 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"Yalumba continues to grace us with a range of wines made from viognier, from entry-level to aspirational, that convey a deep understanding of both the variety and site. Pale straw with green flashes and aromas of lemon, grapefruit and apricot along with hints of lemon sorbet, wildflowers, a liminal whiff of white pepper and stone. Flecks of dried herbs join in on the palate, which is stony and savoury, lingering nicely as it fades away. A great introduction to the variety."
91/100 JamesSuckling.com, January 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"This is perfumed with lots of floral notes as well as ripe apricots and yellow cherries. The palate is dense with a full body and oily texture. Weighty and creamy."
90/100 Erin Larkin, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, May 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"The 2022 Eden Valley Viognier is floral and pretty, with apricot jam, white spring flowers, nashi pears and custard apples. Through the finish, there is a firm lemon verbena character that is not dissimilar to Geraldton wax. It's interesting and good but firm and pronounced. A lovely wine, it delivers"
