The end of an era… The last vintage ever produced
This time last year we were able to feature the 2021 vintage on a deal, and now for the very last vintage produced, we can present another equally compelling offer on this iconic Chardonnay. From its first release this has easily sat alongside the very best of NZ Chardonnay, but the era is drawing to a close.
New Zealand produces some exceptional Chardonnays… and this is one of them. It should never be selling at this price but the accountants at Indevin (owners of Villa Maria) want it gone now that the vineyard has been replaced for urban development. What can we say except, "buy some before it is gone!"
Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"This wine has a pale lemon straw hue and displays a beautiful array of aromas and flavours. The nose possesses white peach and yellow citrus notes combining with bran biscuit, fresh pastry, hazelnuts, flint and toast. With layers of flavour, the succulent mid-palate mouthfeel reveals fine textural complexity and poised acidity leading to an elegant and memorable finish. 2022 is the final vintage from our Ihumatao vineyard."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2022 Vintage)
"This impressive wine has been estate-grown at Mangere, in South Auckland, hand-picked, and fermented and matured in French oak barriques (about 30 per cent new). Bright, light yellow/green, the 2022 vintage is highly fragrant. Mouthfilling and sweet-fruited, it is vibrant and youthful, with deep stonefruit flavours, finely integrated oak and balanced acidity. Very refined, with obvious potential, it’s well worth cellaring to mid-2025+."
5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review (2022 Vintage)
"Rich, creamy and texturally seductive wine with Golden Queen peach, tree-ripened apple, mineral, bran biscuit, grapefruit, vanilla and spicy oak flavours. A real mouthful!"
