Winery notes (2023 Vintage)
"The Premier Cabernet Sauvignon of Vasse Felix. Made every year since 1972, each vintage of this historic Cabernet Sauvignon, Margaret River’s original, embodies a faithful pursuit of excellence, purity and wine artistry. Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon is an archetypal expression, possessing all the hallmarks of the finest Margaret River Cabernet; elegance, power and ageability.
Very deep fruit reminiscent of black fig, blood plum and cassis with a hint of vanilla. Savoury notes delicately imply wax, sandy earth, red chilli, with a subtle suggestion of roast beef ends, finishing with fragrant, polished oak. A classic rich and creamy front palate with deep blackberry, fig and mulberry fruit, lifted by fresh acidity and firm dry tannins, leaving a perfume-filled, plush and powerful finish.
Cabernet parcels from Wilyabrup, (the coastal, mid northern part of Margaret River) are grown on ancient, well drained gravel loam soils that deliver exceptional varietal purity and character. These small, distinctive vineyard sections were individually fermented using indigenous yeasts, with some experiencing maceration periods of up to 35 days. Natural fermentation and extended maceration combined with traditional oxidative handling, allow the personality of each site to emerge before blending. Malbec continues to play a vital supporting role, as it always has in shaping the depth and harmony of our Cabernet Sauvignon. In a cool to moderate and dry season there is amazing concentration of flavour and tannin with a powerful savoury edge."
97/100 Ray Jordan, RayJordanWine.com.au (2023 Vintage)
"Cabernet has been the focus for the last 51 years, and the results show. From a great vintage, this wine has elegance, poise, and medium weight — just as Tom Cullity sought from the start in 1967. Loaded with black fruits, seamlessly integrated oak and tannin, and impeccable balance. A cracking wine that marks the next phase of Vasse Felix cabernet."
96/100 Jane Faulkner, James Halliday's Wine Companion, June 2026 (2023 Vintage)
"This vintage turned out so many elegant, compelling wines – both red and white – and here’s another to add to the collection. A deep, dark garnet, with all the best aromas and flavours the variety can muster, yet there’s a restraint to this. It’s classy with finely shaped tannins and lithe acidity. Drinking beautifully today and won’t disappoint those who want to cellar it."
5 Stars & 96/100 Huon Hooke, The Real Review, November 2025 (2023 Vintage)
"Deep-ish, bright red-purple colour with a deep cassis, mulberry and spice bouquet, background mint and dried herb notes. The wine is intense and bright on the tongue, fresh and bold with serious intensity of cabernet flavour, the fruit sweet on the mid-palate before a crescendo of firm cabernet (and malbec?) tannins firms and dries the long finish. Real depth and structure here, a serious cabernet that will cellar well for many years."
