Trinity Hill The Gimblett is one of our favourite Hawkes Bay Bordeaux variety blends. This label always offers plenty, even more from the outstanding 2021 vintage, and we consider it to be incredible value. Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo make up the majority of the blend this year and followers of the label will be well pleased as it has all the depth and richness we have come to expect. This will age beautifully so get some into your cellar today!

Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"Introducing Trinity Hill's newest version of 'The Gimblett' 2021—a masterful blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Tempranillo, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot. This superb vintage, crafted using traditional winemaking techniques, offers beautiful aromatics of ripe cassis, cedar wood, blackberry, and tobacco. The wine is silky, complex, and full-bodied, with an excellent structure that promises graceful development over the next 6 to 8 years.

Each variety was harvested from individual blocks in two distinct vineyards, de-stemmed and fermented separately. All parcels were either pumped over once, or hand plunged twice, daily to aid optimum colour and tannin extraction. Total time on skins (including post-fermentation maceration) ranged from 19 to 22 days, which helped improve the texture of the tannins while softening and stabilising the individual wines. Each parcel was matured either in new or seasoned 225-litre French oak barriques for up to 12 months before being blended in May and bottled in June 2022, respectively. The percentage of new oak in the final blend was 38%."

96/100 Judges Comments, Decanter World Wine Awards 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"Mouthwatering notes of ripe raspberry, roasted plum and coffee with a savoury, herbaceous edge; firm and robust with a cleansing acidity and an impressively long finish."

Rated Outstanding & 95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, July 2024 (2021 Vintage)
"Deep reds and magenta hues lead to a bouquet of power and complexity, core aromas of dark cherry and boysenberry, layers of wood spices and dried herb, some sweet cigar box moments and dried earth qualities. Rich in texture and flavour as the wine touches the palate, flavours of dark berries with some meaty tones, firm tannins and bold acid line. Youthful and intense, a wine destined to age with best drinking from 2027 through 2037+."

5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2024 (2021 Vintage)
"This is magnificent and engaging, showing blackcurrant, tobacco, rich floral and assorted nut aromas. The concentrated palate delivers terrific weight and richness, wonderfully framed by finely pitched tannins, finishing impressively long and sturdy. Stylish and complex with a great line and length. At its best: now to 2035."

94/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, June 2024 (2021 Vintage)
"Black fruit, ripe raspberry, red capsicum, floral too. Juicy, dark fruit, redcurrant, some herbal frission, tannin is good, quite grainy chocolaty tannin, with a finish of good length. A lot of interest here, and very good to drink."

Rated Excellent, 5 Stars & 93/100 NZ Wine Rater, August 2022 (2021 Vintage)
"Very impressive, deep, purple-black hue. Lifted, fragrant bouquet with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberries and boysenberry with notes of star anise, seaweed and cigar box, cedary oak. Youthful, plush with a powerful core of fruit, generous texture, good weight and layers of firm tannins promising a long life ahead."

5 Stars Yvonne Lorkin, October 2022 (2021 Vintage)
"The way that winemakers Warren Gibson and Damien Fischer have evolved this blend over the last decade or so has been super-exciting to see, particularly as the proportion of cabernet franc is now sitting at 50%. The remainder of the blend consists of cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot and it’s a very pretty wine indeed. Erupting with dried herbs, blueberry, concentrated pepper and leather layers, then unfurling hints of dark berries, freshly turned earth alongside meaty, muscular tannins, the mouthfeel is warming, woolly, soaked in soy and black olive and finishes with a suede-like consistency."

4 ½ Stars & Top 10, Cuisine NZ & International Bordeaux Varieties Tasting, June 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"An energetic and youthful wine with high- toned cassis and dark fruit, and tomato-leaf aromas on the nose. The palate is juicy and focussed by the steely thread of acid that runs throughout with young generous tannin and a long satisfying finish."
