The aroma of this unique dessert wine has been described as “Christmas in a bottle”. Visner is made by macerating wild sour cherries (Prunus Cerasus) in Rosso Piceno red wine (a 50/50 blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano) from the previous vintage with the addition of sugar and a small percentage of crushed cherry kernels. The mixture referments and is then filtered and bottled. It pairs incredibly well with all almond-based desserts as well as chocolate.
Winery Notes
"The production of Visner, a true "meditation nectar," begins in June when the sour cherry is hand-picked from a wild variety of Prunus Cerasus, a widespread spontaneous plant in the hills of the Pergola countryside. Similar in appearance to cherries but with an unmistakably tart flavor, these small fruits, after being carefully destemmed and cleaned, are immediately infused with the previous year's local red wine (Montepulciano and Sangiovese) and sugar. Just three ingredients: sour cherries, local wine, and sugar in precise ratios, and nothing else.
After approximately 4-5 months of fermentation and subsequent maturation, the liqueur is ready to be separated from the solid part and appropriately filtered.
The result is an aromatized wine with an intense ruby red color, a full-bodied and harmonious taste and a dry aftertaste, characterized by its typical fruity bouquet with a clear and unmistakable pleasantly bitter hint of sour cherry.
A sublime dessert wine, it pairs excellently with many traditional desserts from the Marche region, such as aniseed cakes, ciambellone, must doughnuts, and all types of dry pastries.
It has an alcohol content of 13.5 degrees and is best enjoyed served at a temperature of 10-12° C.
This product was included, by Ministerial Decree of 18 July 2000, in the national list of traditional agri-food products, thus making Visner a true typical product of excellence of the Marche Region."
