It's really exciting seeing some new labels appearing on the New Zealand wine scene, almost like a changing of the guard is happening as we are seeing the next generation of wine makers come through and make their mark.
The Hawkes Bay based Three Fates is an exciting project started by three talented and passionate female winemakers Holly Girven Russell, Hester Nesbitt and Casey Motley. The trio of women behind the brand have always worked with a sense of curiosity, using an intuitive approach to winemaking garnered from a decade spent working in wineries across the world.
This Chenin Blanc is a very special release that has been made in conjunction with Holly's dad, Gordon Russel a winemaker with more than three decades of experience at Esk Valley and a particular love of Chenin Blanc. The grapes come off the revered Two Terraces vineyard in Mangatahi.
Winery notes (2025 Vintage)
"From the late ripening Two Terraces vineyard in the Mangatahi Terraces, owned and farmed by Ian and Linda Quinn. This is a collaboration with luminary winemaker and Chenin Blanc master, Gordon Russell.
In 2025 we had the honour of also including the fruit from what we’ve dubbed “The Golden Slope,” a collection of 200 bush vines in the front yard of the Quinn’s house. This added an extra intensity to the blend with it’s incredible acid structure and pureness of fruit.
We worked with the wine as three parcels: the slope, the pineappley clone 220 and the more appley clone 880. Each parcel was treated differently with the 220 foot stomped and soaked for texture, the 880 whole bunch pressed for purity and the whole lot fermented with wild yeasts. Eventually the parcels were brought together to form a harmonious blend.
Rich, full-bodied, and textured, this wine is packed with bold flavours of pineapple, passionfruit, beeswax, and grapefruit pith, with a layer of quince rounding it out."
94/100 Stephen Wong MW, The Real Review, May 2026 (2025 Vintage)
"A rich and ripe chenin blanc with impressive weight and concentrated flavours of pink grapefruit, honey, pineapple and mango wrapped in a lightly grainy texture with hints of woody tannins underneath. Almost full-bodied for chenin blanc, it builds towards the back, finishing just off-dry and spicy. This is a powerful wine with plenty of life ahead. "
