A special aged release. This is a small batch wine from a selected parcel on a hillside vineyard on Blacks Ave that winemaker Haydon Good thought too good and different to include in the Crater Rim Waipara Riesling. Here the vineyard is a mix of calcerous/limestone and clay soils which makes the wine a a little more richer in texture and body, with good phenolics and the flavour profile is a little riper.

At six years, this is a shimmering gold colour with lime marmalade, honey, preserved lemon flavours. There is just a hint of botrytis sweetness but the minerality balances that out perfectly and is best described as off-dry. A deliciously aged Riesling that once again shows the extraordinary quality for the dollar you can get from this variety in Waipara.

5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, June 2022 (2019 Vintage)
"Splendidly complex and enticing, the bouquet shows grapefruit, lemon curd, subtle spice and toasty notes, leading to a beautifully flowing palate that's juicy and vibrant. There's a hint of sweetness which is brilliantly countered by lively acidity, finishing superbly long and crisp. Style: Off-dry. At its best: now to 2030."

The Crater Rim takes its name from the twin craters of the ancient Akaroa and Lyttelton volcanos. Eruptions from these majestic landforms in ages past gifted the surrounding land with an enduring fertility.

The Crater Rim's first yineyard was planted above Akaroa township and the significance of this location in terms of its climatic effect on the whole region of Canterbury meant this brand would extend to include plantings in additional sub-regionsof Waipara, Omihi and Banks Peninsula and Central Otago.

Waipara, in North Canterbury's hills, is now the home base for The Crater Rim where specific sub-regional terriors contribute to the wines produced on their vineyards. Exceptional Pinot Noir is produced at The Crater Rim's winery site, Omihi Rise, also in North Canterbury. The Frahar Vineyard in Waipara also supplies Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

The Crater Rim is a frequent recipient of awards, including multiple medals in the New World Wine Awards and regular reviews by Sam Kim of Wine Orbit.
