Vineyard of the Year – NZ Organic Wine Awards 2021
Winery Notes (2020 Vintage)
"An exciting premium red varietal grown widely in Austria. It produces dark skinned berries with smooth velvety tannins. Genetically it is thought to be a ‘wild cousin’ of Pinot Noir.
Often thought of as a ‘gentle giant’ – this is because the wine is big in colour but on the palate it’s gentle with beautiful smooth, silky tannins. Cropping levels are kept low to ensure the fruit is concentrated. Varietal flavours are accumulated through hang time on the vines well into Autumn. Hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeast, then matured in French oak for 11 months (25% new), this wine then undergoes natural malolactic fermentation."
Rated Excellent & 94/100 Cameron Douglas MS, November 2023 (2020 Vintage)
"A lovely wine with fragrances of black currant and new leather, blackberry fruits, violets and dark baking spices of clove and vanilla and some smoky wood complexities. On the palate the textures from tannins and acidity weave through the core fruit flavours that mirror the bouquet. The genetic link to Pinot Noir shows through the red berry fruit flavours. A great drinking wine and smart choice alternative to Pinot Noir. Best drinking from 2024 through 2030."
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, March 2023 (2020 Vintage)
"Pristine and elegantly perfumed with Black Doris plum, cranberry, dried herb, tar and roasted nut aromas, it's bold and robust in the mouth delivering excellent weight and textured mouthfeel, superbly structured by firm tannins. Certified organic. At its best: now to 2032. "
5 Stars & 18.5/20 (93) Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Review, March 2023 (2020 Vintage)
"Dark, ruby-red, slightly lighter purple on the rim. The nose is elegant with bright aromas of red plum, cherry, cedar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Medium-bodied, red cherry and plum aromas entwined with spice and cedar. The mouthfeel is fine with silky tannins; lively acidity drives with good energy to an elegant finish. This Saint Laurent shows a red fruit core with juicy acidity, spice and cedar details, and a smooth, silky palate. Match with lamb and corned beef over the next 5+ years. Handpicked, fermented with indigenous yeast to 13% alc, aged 11 months in French oak. BioGro organic certified."
