Selected for the Top 12 Hawke’s Bay Annual Chardonnay Collection 2022 – Cameron Douglas MS

Cameron Douglas says this about the 2022 Annual Hawkes Bay Chardonnay Collection… "These wines rival many I’ve encountered from international producers, including those from Burgundy." To be included in this list, the wine must be very, very good!

This is a fantastic offer on top class Chardonnay from the very capable team at Squawking Magpie… A special bottling, combining fruit from the Terraces and Gravels vineyards. This Chardonnay is sourced from select sites on these two classic Hawkes Bay terroirs, from which is crafted an elegant Chardonnay with toasty citrus notes, deepened by subtle tropicals. Gently lush and very moreish, the Terraces and Gravels is a great option at this discount price!

17/20 Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, July 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"Rich nose, unashamedly round and glorious but by no means sickly. There is pace and race and interest too. Very satisfying and verging on brazen. I'm glad a wine like this made it into Cameron Douglas MS's selection. A little sweet and salty."

94/100 Jamie Goode, WineAnorak.com, August 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"This is soft and smooth with lovely forward melon and pineapple fruit, as well as a hint of cabbage and some green notes in the background. There’s even some grapefruit here. So bold and fruit-driven with distinctive – and delicious – fruity flavours to the fore. An outlier, and a good one."

94/100 Tom Cannavan, wine-pages.com (2022 Vintage)
"I really enjoyed this relatively lush and large-scaled cuvée from Squawking Magpie, made in a combination of new and older barrels and from two different terroirs. With 14% alcohol the ripeness and creamy, nectarine and buttery-rich style is up front. Lemon meringue pie and exotic fruit aromas lead on to a palate that is textured and has real fruit weight and barrel-creaminess, but the tight lemon and mineral acidity punches through."

93/100 David Walker Bell, WineFolio.co.nz, July 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"A bright collection of aromas of apple, flint, quince, lemon curd, peach, caramel and pear. Quite dry with a bite of acid and a nip of green with nettle, tarragon and grapefruit pith. The oak is quite toasty, but I found the palate settled into gentleness – almost delicate, where no one element shouted or unsettled the balance. A creamy texture adds to the smoothness, and the finish has good length."
