Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"Deep ruby red colour. Aromas of ripe blackberry, plum, red liquorice, and delicate florals show beautifully. The palate is medium to full bodied with flavours of ripe black fruits, raspberry, anise, pepper, thyme and a lovely thread of vanilla, cinnamon and cedar from oak and fruit. The finish is long with a lovely savoury twist.
100% destemmed but not crushed prior to fermentation. Very gentle extraction with one gentle pump over each day of fermentation. Pressed soon after dryness. Barrel ageing of 14 months in French oak barriques, 35% new."
5 Stars & 96/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, May 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"Deeply tinted, intense syrah with cassis, ripe cherry/berry, pepper, cacao powder and a subtle floral influence. Powerful, youthful wine that cries out for a few years bottle age and a little aeration when first opened. Serious syrah."
5 Stars & 96/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, April 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"This is stunning; precise and detailed with seductive complexity and sensual mouthfeel, its perfumed bouquet shows Black Doris plum, blueberry, floral, game, cedar and warm spice aromas, leading to a concentrated palate displaying plush texture and layers of polished tannins. With more time in the glass, it keeps on giving. At its best: 2025 to 2040. "
Rated Outstanding & 95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, June 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"Intense, dark fruited and varietal bouquet, aromas of dark plums and black currant flesh, layers of toasty barrel with clove and baked vanilla pod, violets and rocky mineral qualities rush to fill the bouquet quota. Fleshy, juicy, salivating and dry all at once on the palate. A mix of stones and dried earth challenge the fleshy core then contrasting tannins and back bone of acidity secure the structure. Youthful, taut, fleshy and well made. A wine that offers excellent drinking in 2023 and through 2027+."
94+/100 Erin Larkin, RobertParker.com, Wine Advocate, December 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"The 2021 Cru Heretaunga Syrah is spicy and gravelly on the nose, with charred meat crust, gristle and black pudding, violets and field flowers. It's pretty as well as being grunty and firm—a nice juxtaposition. There are pomegranate pearls and mulberry. I love the mid-palate succulence here; it really makes an impact. The fruit persists through the finish, unbroken. It's great."
