Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"Vibrant garnet with great clarity. The nose has brooding aromas of dark fruits, spicy complexity and florals. Dense, compact palate with a core of umami raspberries and a savoury, resinous complexity surrounded by soft fine tannins and a saline, palate-activating structure. A pure, vibrant and expansive expression of Earth Smoke.
Planted between 2000-2002 at 11,111 vines/ha and farmed biodynamically from inception. An expansive, east-facing slope.Strong, beautifully structured soils; 30% clay, 15% active lime.
Carefully hand sorted, fully destemmed and fermented with yeasts from the vineyard, gently fermented using infusion methods for 21-27 days. Settled in tank before being transferred to French wooden barrels. Elevage of 18 months, then bottled unfined and unfiltered."
95/100 Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, September 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"A crispness, a pulse of tart cherry, a crunch of cranberry, some nougat licks and woody spice with sappy pomegranate juice, a touch of hazelnut paste with bergamot tea, sage leaf and dried rosemary amongst the mix of characters here. It’s got volume of intense, granitic minerality and a grumbling swish of pumice-like, almost Italianate texture to tannins amongst the vibrancy of fruit character."
95/100 Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous, May 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"Having made no Earth Smoke in 2021 due to spring frosts and cool flowering ravaging the yield, it's a welcome return in 2022. Translucent, pure and delicately textured, this Pinot Noir shows a fine hand and the confidence to be hands off. The wine is calm; in the mouth, it gives the impression that a hush has descended. It is attractively scented – full of dried herbs, cherry, festive spice, violets and a hint of smoke. There's plentiful concentration without weight. The tannins are pliant, providing the finest coating for your palate. Perhaps not as long as it could be, but I'm really nitpicking here."

Pyramid Valley's story began in the slopes and soil of North Canterbury at Waikari Estate. In 2000, Mike & Claudia Elze Weersing applied their impressive array of knowledge in viticulture, oenology, and biodynamics to this plot of land.
Steve Smith and Brian Sheth took the reins in 2017 to continue the legacy of spectacular winemaking. Some of the world's most profound Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays have been produced at Waikari, its combination of fertile soil and high-altitude slopes constituting a unique terroir over 80 hectares of perfectly placed plantings.
In 2018 the scope of Pyramid Valley's wine environs expanded with the purchase of Manata Estate in Central Otago. This established (over 150 years) vineyard has bolstered the magnificent Pinot Noir offering of Pyramid Valley, due to soils of rare distinction - the result of careful culivation resulting in soils with high levels of organic matter and natural humus.
