Back in 2009 Central Otago winemaker Paul Pujol went to do vintage at De Vogüé in Burgundy, with François Millet. Later, in 2013, Paul took François’ son as an intern, and François and his wife visited Central Otago. Since then, they have struck up a friendship and made a wine together from the Prophet’s Rock vineyard, called Cuvée Aux Antipodes, with 2015 as the debut vintage. This is just the eigth release and already it has reached almost legendary status in wine circles.
Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"This wine is a collaboration between Prophet’s Rock winemaker Paul Pujol and esteemed French winemaker François Millet from Chambolle-Musigny, Burgundy. Former winemaker at Comte George de Vogüé for 35 vintages, François continues to make wine in Burgundy with his family under ‘François Millet et Fils’ and with us in New Zealand. Since the first release in 2015, this wine has been sourced exclusively from the same parcel on our small Home Vineyard site up in the hills of Bendigo sub- region, Central Otago.
François Millet continues to tease out the nuances of his parcel of our Home Vineyard with the seventh vintage of Cuvée aux Antipodes. Plums, cherries and florals of rose petal and flowering thyme jump out of the glass. A palate of red and blue fruits, with a subtle savoury note continue on the palate. Incredible structure of elegant but powerful tannin and pure acidity give a wine of both approachability and longevity. A wine of incredible balance, complexity, elegance and clarity.
All elements of the winemaking are directed by François who has formed a consistent approach to this parcel since 2015. The handpicked fruit is destemmed and fermented using only indigenous ‘wild’ yeast. A key feature of our vinification is extremely low extraction, all our small open top tanks are only hand-plunged once during fermentation. The wine then spends 17 months in barrel (35% new) and undergoes indigenous malolactic fermentation."

"The 2022 Cuvee aux Antipodes Pinot Noir Is not yet labelled (although it is bottled) and is scheduled for release in either late 2024 or early 2025. The wine is tightly wound and floral, with violets, crushed rocks, tapenade, apple skins, blood orange and black tea. It is mineral and balanced and ultimately an incredibly pretty view of Pinot Noir. There's a Campari-esque minerality here—think dehydrated orange peel, hints of amaro/rosemary/arnica and exotic spice. It's a ripper. Beautiful wine."
95/100 Anne Krebiehl MW, Decanter UK, February 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"Made in collaboration with François Millet, former cellar master at Comte Georges de Vogüé in Chambolle-Musigny, this Pinot was grown in a site of lime-laced clays in Bendigo that are mixed with some schist and quartz. The darkish nose is alive with liquorice and pine, alongside pepper and briar spice. The palate has savoury, herb-crusted cherry overtones with supremely elegant, fine, smooth yet mouth-coating tannins. All is highlighted by vivid freshness, but what marks this wine out is its exquisite texture, so elegant, so flowing, so expansive, yet so firm. Beautiful."
