Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"This is not a “regular” Barolo! The harmonious fusion of multiple terroirs gives the possibility to catch the unique and diverse characters of Nebbiolo from different positions and exposures of this region and to represent them as a whole in a complete and balanced Barolo, following the Langhe tradition. Structured and sharp tannins meet a pleasant finesse, with ripen and spicy red fruits, with long persistence. Extremely long ageing potential.
Produced every year respecting the style of Pio Family, since 1881.
From the accurate blend of Nebbiolo grapes sourced from 9 different vineyards in the Barolo region, in particular in the village of Serralunga (“Ornato”, “Briccolina”, “Serra” and “Lirano”), Monforte (“Mosconi”), Novello (“Ravera”), La Morra (“Roncaglie”) and Grinzane Cavour (“Gustava” and “Garretti”).
Fermentation and long maceration on the skins in stainless steel tanks. We then proceed with the final meticulous blend of locations and the long ageing in big barrels of French and Eastern Europe oak for nearly 24 months and for a small amount in French oak barriques. Long bottle ageing before release to increase drinkability."
97/100 James Suckling (2020 Vintage)
"Very primary fruit with beautiful aromas of peaches, strawberries, berries and flowers. It’s medium- to full-bodied, with bitter citrus, cedar, chocolate and coffee bean character. Tight at the end. From five villages, primarily Serralunga, Monforte, La Morra, Grinzane Cavour, and Novello. Needs two or three years to open and will age for a very long time."
94/100 Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, January 2025 (2020 Vintage)
"This wine represents a blend of Nebbiolo from Serralunga d’Alba (Ornato, La Serra and Briccolina), Grinzane Cavour (Gustava and Garretti), La Morra (Roncaglie), Novello (Ravera) and, more recently, Monforte d'Alba (Mosconi). The Pio Cesare 2020 Barolo has an approachable style for sure, with classic Nebbiolo tones of berry fruit, orange peel and licorice. It reveals an integrated and silky personality and tannins that feel very inviting for near and medium-term drinking."
93/100 James Button, Decanter, September 2024 (2020 Vintage)
"Sourced from vineyards spreads across the region, this 2020 offers a gentle aroma of cherry and forest berries, sous bois and a touch of menthol. There's more verticality and intensity here compared to the Barbaresco, with fine, round tannins, all wrapped up in some energetic acidity. Dark cherry, mint and hints of liquorice and herbs define this classy effort."
93/100 Wine Spectator (2020 Vintage)
"A mix of cherry, strawberry, rose, tar, and underbrush aromas and flavours highlight this elegant, solidly built red. Supple in texture until dusty tannins emerge on the finish. Shows fine balance overall, with a super long finish."
