Peregrine wines are named in honour of New Zealand’s endemic falcon (Karearea in Maori), a bird that combines both power and finesse, the essence of Peregrine’s range of wines. None more so than this impressive Pinot Noir which has gone through somewhat of a resurgence in recent vintages. This can be attributed to amongst other things, vine age, a switch to organic principles and clearly a greater understanding of site and winemaking, with judicious use of oak and considered whole bunch elements attributing to a Central Otago Pinot Noir of the highest quality.
Winery notes (2023 Vintage)
"This elegant Pinot Noir is perfumed with wild berries and hints of cardamon and cocoa. Its finely structured palate features dark red berry fruit, aromatic spice and earthy flavours. Purity, elegance combine with texture, concentration and length. A true reflection of the Central Otago sub regions that contribute to our Pinot Noir. We’ve timed the release of this wine so you can enjoy it now, or allow to age.
Organically certified Central Otago Pinot Noir – Peregrine Estate Bendigo (50%) and Pisa (50%) sub regions. Up to 18% whole bunch fermentation on selected fruit parcels. Fermented in open top fermenters, mainly pumped over and only plunged during the peak of ferment. Drained and pressed to French Oak barriques. 11 months on French oak, including 22% new oak."
Reviews for the 2022 vintage below…
94/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, August 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"Fragrant, floral pinot noir with bright cherry, cassis and violet flavours. Elegant wine with energy. Supple but not complex and showing a diverse range of flavours. Should develop well with bottle age."
92/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, August 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"Cherry, thyme, a little bit of a smoky paprika thing here too. It’s medium-bodied, crisp red fruits and cherry, maybe a little bit tangy too, offering some dried orange peel, with light sooty and powdery tannin, distinct dried herb aromatics, with a finish of good length. It’s a bit zesty and herbal, but a good wine all up. Very Otago in character."
4 Stars Cuisine Pinot Noir Tasting, April 2025 (2022 Vintage)
"Deeply coloured with just a hint of fade, this wine has attractive up front ripe-fruit aromas with some spice and dried-herb aromas. The palate is well structured and moderately weighted with a touch of earthiness that sits as complement to the ripe fruit flavours."
