Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"We use the traditional French variety of Muscat (Muscat à petit grain). There are very few rows in our vineyard, so only a small volume of this wine has been made. After picking, the grapes were gently pressed, with only the free run juice being used. The wine was tank fermented to preserve varietal integrity, and slowly matured over four months, until a perfect balance was achieved.

On release it has a bright lemon hue. The nose is exotic and intensely perfumed, a core of rose oil and lavender interwoven with threads of rock melon, mango, key lime pie, dried fig, vanilla and a whisp of nougat. Plush and silky textured, with a backbone of acidity and ripe phenolics to contrast the gentle off-dry mouthfeel. Elegantly structured, it flows evenly across the palate, building towards a sustained and harmonious finish."

Reviews for the 2018 vintage below…

Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, October 2022 (2018 Vintage)
"Wonderful, intense aromatics of flowers and white spices, some candy, honey, apricots, peaches and roasted yellow apples. Fleshy, fruity, spicy and delicious. There’s texture to this wine from phenolics and fruit tannins, the acidity pushes these along nicely, but the wine always comes back to the fruit. Nice lengthy finish, balanced and well made with best drinking from day of purchase through 2026."

5 Stars Michael Cooper, July 2023 (2018 Vintage)
"This rare, estate-grown, North Canterbury wine is made in a sturdy Alsace style, hand-harvested ultra-ripe at Waipara and tank-fermented. The light gold, powerful 2018 vintage is fragrant and weighty (over 15 per cent alcohol by volume), with rich, peachy flavours, gentle sweetness (14 grams/litre of residual sugar), and bottle-aged complexity. A very distinctive wine, it's probably at or near its peak."

  • Bob Campbell MW, of Australian Gourmet Traveller says "Pegasus Bay gets my vote for Waipara’s top winery for a number of reasons: its wines are often exceptionally good and are always made in adventurous, out of the main stream styles"

  • NZ Wine Country says "if a wine critic was not passionate about any of Pegasus Bay’s wine they should seriously consider a change in career".
