Pegasus Bay wines are made to age and their wines tend to be released later than most wineries, holding them back until they feel they are beginning to be ready to drink. However these are wines that will improve further with cellaring and so each year a small limited cellar release is made of wines that are 10 years old – ready to enjoy and savour.
Winery notes (2014 Vintage)
"It has deep purple hue, reddish brown towards the edges. The nose offers up aromas of raspberry, pomegranate, black cherry, purple plum, chocolate, and spice. Layered beneath this are hints of barbequed meats, grilled mushrooms, and black olive tapenade. On the palate it is richly textured and mouth filling with powerful, but fine-grained tannins that give a silky finish with exceptional length. Extended maturation in bottle has given this wine a pronounced savoury character, adding complexity and intrigue."
5 Stars & 97/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, March 2024 (2014 Vintage)
"Power and grace in one, this gorgeously maturing pinot shows dark berry, charcuterie, cake spice, porcini and roasted nut aromas on the nose. The palate exhibits awesome concentration and plush texture, wonderfully framed by seamlessly woven tannins, making it sumptuous and delicious. At its best: now to 2030."
97/100 JamesSuckling.com, November 2023 (2014 Vintage)
"Aromas of coffee, caramel, plums, and dried flowers. Medium body with a lovely polish and beautiful texture, so succulent and finely velvety in so many ways. Complex and thoughtful."
Rated Outstanding & 96/100 Cameron Douglas MS, April 2024 (2014 Vintage)
"All great Pinot Noir must be given the time to relax into the glass it is poured in then become ambient over the time taken to drink from the glass. This is exactly the case with this 2014 from Pegasus Bay. After 15 minutes in glass the wine begins to reveal its story of place and time. Complex aromas of fruit and spice, mineral and use of barrel. Dark cherry, leather and cinnamon, a touch of bacon oak and cedar, old roses and fallen leaves. On the palate a wine of texture and mouthfeel then the nuances of bottle age and time with a savoury dark berry core, polished tannins and medium+ acid line, preserves red fruits and leather, clove and velvet roses. The wine continues to develop over the next hour and shows how it will continue to age over the next 3-5 years. An excellent example with best drinking from day of purchase through 2034+."
5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, March 2024 (2014 Vintage)
"Rich, dense and moderately complex wine that is beginning to show some good bottle development while retaining fruit sweetness and alcohol warmth. A pleasure to taste."
5 Stars & 18.5 (93) Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews, May 2024 (2014 Vintage)
"Bright, medium garnet with a ruby core, lightly on the rim. The nose is gently full and enticing, with aromas of dried cherry, plum and a suggestion of cranberry, melded with autumn leaves, mushroom, meatiness and spices. Medium-bodied, aromas of dried plum and cherry melded with cinnamon,
nutmeg, mushroom, unfolding forest floor and hints of meatiness. The fruit is mellowed and nicely integrated with spice and savoury developments. Silky tannins and fresh acidity provide structure, and a long linger. This aged Pinot Noir is silky yet powerful, with integrated details, complexity and a lengthy finish."
