Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2025
Back in Back…
No, we’re not flogging the remastered edition of AC/DC’s Back in Black (still the second best-selling album of all time!), but we are cranking up the volume on another legendary name from the 1980s: Nga Waka.
This iconic Martinborough winery is back with serious swagger. Think sharp new labels, a revitalised team led by Paul Mason (ex-Martinborough Vineyards), and, most importantly, an impressive new release of their outstanding value Pinot, Three Paddles.
Fresh off a Gold Medal at the 2025 New Zealand International Wine Show and already a favourite among the Vino Fino crew, this wine is primed to rocket up the charts. Just like AC/DC, we reckon it’ll be on the best-sellers list before you can turn the volume down.
2024 saw the Wine Gods shine brightly on wineries across New Zealand, but none more so than in Martinborough. We have been thoroughly impressed by the releases we have tasted so far, so when we saw this sub $25 Pinot won a Gold Medal at the NZIWS we were pretty keen to try it.
This is a dark fruited, concentrated Pinot coming in at a generous 14.5% alc. It is suited for those who like their bigger style Pinots (there's plenty of you out there!) and comes with the Vino Fino seal of approval. Impressive stuff at this price point!
Winery notes (2024 Vintage)
"Exhibits typical regional characters of red berries and cherries mixed with spicy and earthy notes. Dry, full bodied style. The texture of the wine is soft with supple tannins and carries flavours of red fruits and spice through the palate to a soft, persistent finish.
De-stemmed only. Total maceration time 21-24 days. Malolactic fermentation in barrel, tight-grain French oak barriques (22% new). Total time in barrel -12 months. Light fining and filtered."
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, July 2025 (2024 Vintage)
"It's beautifully fruited and inviting on the nose, showing dark plum, cherry, olive, game, and toasted nut aromas. The palate delivers succulent fruit flavours with supple texture and polished tannins, making it harmonious and structured with a persistent, satisfying finish. At its best: now to 2030."
